Sportspy Reports – Sunday February 8th 2009.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 8th 2009.Boundary Park, Blackpool was this morning's intended venue where three good looking Division 3 Cup ties were on offer including favourites FC Matrix who faced a tough match against fellow Division 3B rivals Hampton Road Social Club.  However, on arrival at 10:40 all of the players were heading home due to frostbound pitches so it was back to Commonedge Road where two or three games survived.  Here are pictures from the Division 3 Cup tie between C&G Electrical FC and Bar 19 FC as well as the Division 1 league fixture between Northern Care Reserves FC and Fylde Coast Gates FC.

You can't beat a Cup tie where both sides expect to win.  The draw had been kind to these two struggling teams and a rare chance of a Cup quarter final was at stake.  As expected it was pretty even but then C&G took the lead as shown in the above video.  A Bar 19 FC free kick was cleared and C&G moved down the field at pace.  The ball eventually fell to Martin Downes who showed great technique to control it before displaying even better technique to hit a dipping volley into the back of the net from outside the box with the help of the underside of the bar.  An excellent Cup tie that finished at 3-3 after extra time.  They'll try again next week.

Then it was off to Collins Park.  At 11am we had two teams outside the gates but nobody with a key with which to gain access.  Maybe this was a blessing in disguise as by the time the game finally started the pitch had started to soften.  Fylde Coast Gates (Stripes) were looking for an important win away against the improving Northern Care Reserves.  Gates suffered a setback when their keeper was shown a straight red for bringing down Paul Simpson who missed the resultant penalty.  Gates took the lead when a shot eluded Elvis in the Northern goal and floated over his head.  Northern deservedly equalised through a great Paul Wallis strike (Video below) before Gates grabbed a late winner to take the points and go four clear at the top.

Local Football – Too Much Rubbish

Local Football - Too Much RubbishLocal councils have raised concerns about the increasing amount of litter being left behind by BFSFA teams and supporters on Sunday mornings.

The councils accept that litter is always going to be a problem in public spaces but have commented that the problem has been getting noticeably worse this year from our Sunday league teams.  Discarded bags, drinks bottles, sweet wrappers etc. have been building up, particularly at Broadwaters and Bourne Poacher. Councils are requesting that teams take a black bin bag along with their equipment, stick all their rubbish in that and leave it, if necessary, in or next to the bins already provided.

Wyre Council Call Foul On Cottam Hall

Wyre Council Call Foul On Cottam HallWyre Council have been receiving complaints from residents concerning foul and abusive language heard from footballers on Sunday mornings at Cottam Hall.

The letter from the Council, addressed to BFSFA League Secretary Peter Collins, stressed that Cottam Hall is a public park shared by many other members of the community including children on a Sunday morning.  If the situation continues the Council will have to consider withdrawing the use of these pitches to the Sunday morning football community.  Referees, managers and secretaries are to be advised by the League to warn players prior to every BFSFA match on any ground to tone down their more colourful language wherever possible.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 1st 2009.The YMCA at Lytham was the venue for today's Division 2 Cup second round tie between Mythop Leisure FC and West Coast Tackle Postal FC.  Both were from Division 2A but were yet to face each other this season in league action.  A place in the last eight was stake against the winners of the FC Excelsior v North West Kitchens FC match.

Last season, Division 2 Cup interest ended for these two teams in Round 2.  Mythop lost 1-0 at home to North West Kitchens whilst West Coast lost 4-2 away at the Halfway House.  West Coast ended a disappointing season down in eleventh place in 2A but Mythop went on to finish fifth in 2B and were subsequently boosted up into 2A.  The sides are yet to face each other this season in league action.  In all likelihood I expect that this may have been the first time that the clubs had ever faced each other.

Steve Ramsdale's Mythop reached today's second round thanks to a bye but opponents West Coast had to knock out the Old England 3-0.  This morning's league table showed Mythop in sixth place.  They have two games in hand on leaders FC Eden although they're twelve points adrift.  Their pitch out in Lytham has suffered more than most this season due to the inclement weather resulting in a 'stop-start' campaign.  They've taken seven points from the last nine and look to be in decent form.  Gledhill Cup interest ended in the opening Round with a 4-2 home defeat to FC Matrix.

West Coast Tackle are struggling this season down in twelfth.  Thus far they've only managed to win two of their twelve league games.  Daryl Prance's men are still to gain a point in 2009.  They received a bye in the opening round of the Gledhill before losing 5-2 to North West Kichens 5-2 in the second round.  The form book suggested a win for Mythop but in Sunday Cup Football just about anything can happen.

This morning's referee was Dale Harvey and if the Fair Play Table was anything to go by he was in for an easy game as they both sat top and second respectively.  Extremely cold, but bright and dry this morning for spectators.  At 11:02 am Mr Harvey's whistle got the Cup tie underway with Mythop in their yellow strip kicking towards the ditch.

On the hour mark Mythop pulled it abck to 3-4 thanks to a goalkeeping calamity.  A Mythop chance was half cleared and the ball eventually fell to Paul Allen.  He hit a shot but in all honesty it was a tame effort.  Branston misjudged it, it hit his shoulder and agonisingly rolled over the line.  More Frank Carson than Scott Carson.  3-4.

For the next twenty minutes West Coast kind of steadied the ship and had a number of good breaks upfield.  However, Mythop went very close from a corner when a scrambled effort looked to have crossed the line.  The follow up was also hacked off the line.  See for yourself in the video below – did it cross the line?

We were now deep into added time, the away supporters were screaming for the whistle and my fingers had frozen to the camera.  A misplaced pass in the West Coast midfield gifted possession to Mythop.  A great low throughball was played to the edge of the box.  Matt Rainbow dummied it and chased after it, he was now clear one on one against the keeper.  “Please not extra time, please not extra time, miss it you little…………”   GOAL – Extra time !  4 – 4.

Smith & Blant celebrate the Cup win.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 1st 2009.

In summary this was a highly entertaining Cup tie that warmed the heart on a freezing Fylde Coast morning.  West Coast played excellent in the first half and fully deserved their half time 4-1 lead.  Mythop were frankly rubbish in the first 45 minutes as their opponents won everything all over the pitch.

In the second period they picked up their game and achieved their objective of grabbing two quick goals back before the hour mark helped a little by West Coast keeper Branston.  Mythop kept at it and snatched a deserved equaliser in additional time.  Despite West Coast's best efforts there was only going to be one winner in extra time and so it proved as Mythop went on to reach the quarter finals with a 7-4 win.

Good performances from West Coast by young Seear and Hargreaves but especially captain John Emery who led by example.  He scored two good goals and was still harrying and chasing deep into extra time.

As for Mythop Matt Rainbow is a real handful and he finally looked interested when he scored the all important free-kick.  Many looked sorry for themselves at 4-1 down but not Chris Lomax who took on the role of leader from midfield and dragged his troops back into the game and on to eventual victory with a hard working performance.  He took the Man of the Match award and with it the prize football and famous 'Sporty' kindly provided by our recommended kit supplier Teamsport90.

Well refereed by Mr Harvey.  Good luck to Mythop in the last eight.

Snaps from The Gate - Sunday 1st February 2009A few snaps from this morning's tasty-looking Division Two Cup clash between Excelsior FC and the league's so-called 'dirtiest' team North West Kitchens FC at Squires Gate FC's fine ground.

Clear skies this morning although a tad chilly. You know it's cold when you see the likes of local footballing legend and regular marathon runner Ian “Nico” Nicholls taking to the field with gloves on.

As of this morning Excelsior were well placed in Division 2B in fourth place just 4 points off leaders Fleetwood Cricket Club. Just 3 defeats in the league all season, one to the leaders and two unexplainable disappointments against Paris Casino and Brun Grove.

In the Gledhill they were hammered 9-1 by Red Rose but they progressed in this competition by defeating Claremont Cons 2-0.

This season they have added experience to the squad, importing most of last season's Waterloo FC from Division One in Ian Nicholls, Marc Green, Mark Truby, Gaz Jakins, Martyn Percival, Ben Hopes and Mark Lisgo.

North West Kitchens sat a creditable sixth in Division 2B this morning, 11 points adrift and a game in hand on the leaders.

Again, just 3 defeats all season in the league, twice to leaders Fleetwood Cricket Club and a narrow 1-2 against AFC Marton.

In the Gledhill they defeated St. Annes and then Kingsfield before losing out to Red Rose Catering. A 2-0 against Links earned them today's tie at one of the best grounds in the area.

Both sides were missing key players but Kitchens were the worst off, having only player/manager Russ Perrett on the bench.

As time ran out Marc Green fouled Whittle in the area to earn himself a booking and Kitchens a penalty.

Unfortunately for John Whittle he skied it. Fortunately for him though, I was too busy changing the batteries in the camera to catch it for posterity.

A deserved win for Excelsior today although Kitchens will rue their slow start and wasteful finishing. On another day the result could have been much closer.

A cracking game played in excellent spirit by both teams and well officiated by Lee Willetts.
