Red Rose Catering FC aiming to reach fifth Divisional Cup final in a row.

At 11:10 and with only eight players in sight I didn't hold out much hope for Red Rose Catering but in the end they mustered a side together and edged out rivals Hydronics FC in the local derby 1-0 to reach the semi final.  The team are still on course to reach their fifth Divisional Cup final in succession.  They'll be joined in the semi finals by Quilligans who beat Layton Institute 2-0 at Collins Park and by Wrea Green who picked up their first win in seven to dump Pulcinellas out of the Cup thanks to a 7-4 win.  In the Cup game of the day the Devonshire Arms comfortably beat Poulton 4-1 at the High School.

In the Division 1 Cup Ward Heating FC made the semis after beating Bloomfield Vets 3-2 and FC Loco beat Fleetwood Car Centre for the second week in a row to also reach the last four.  3-1 the final score at Fleetwood Road, Thornton.

In a re-arranged Premier Division match Blackpool Rangers moved up to third in the table after beating Northern Care 3-0 away.  They're now eight points behind Quilligans with four games in hand.  There were no league fixtures in Division 1 today.

Another important day in Division 2A saw the top two open up a little gap.  In the league game of the day AFC Additions beat Waterloo Sports & Social to go ahead of them into second place.  They're a point behind leaders FC Eden but with a game in hand after Eden picked up three important points in a 4-1 win away at Mythop Leisure.  Great Eccleston's promotion hopes picked up thanks to a 4-1 win against Rossall Tavern but in the coupon buster of the day the Squirrel's hopes of a top three finish ended as they crashed to a 4-1 defeat to Highfield Social.  Spindles stayed in touch thanks to a 5-3 win against the Links Hotel and the West Coast Tackle v Claremont match finished in a 2-2 draw.

The top four in Division 2B all won this morning.  Fleetwood Cricket Club's 4-0 home win against Marshall Court maintains their two-point lead over Fairhaven who beat Skye 3-1. Paris Casino's good form continued with 2-0 away win at Frenchman's Cove and FC Excelsior and North West Kitchens met yet again but this time FC Excelsior took the points with a 3-0 home win.  FC Brun Grove went fifth after their 2-1 away win against AFC Marton.  St Annes Ex Service were hammered 9-0 by FC Talbot and bottom club Old England stay on five points after narrowly losing 2-1 to Progress Sports & Social.

We have new leaders in Division 3A this afternoon after Foulds Metals beat C&G Electrical 6-1 at Stanley Park.  MA2 FC in second were without a game but have three games in hand on Foulds with a two point gap.  Tiles' surprise 5-4 defeat in the local derby to Walkabout Celtic makes it very difficult for them to finish in the top two.  The Farmers are in fifth after beating Layton Institute Juniors 2-1 away and FC Gretone thumped Ansdell 6-0 away at the High School.  The Falcon pushed Teamsport FC back down to seventh after their 2-1 home win.

It now looks like Division 3B is a three horse race.  FC Matrix, although currently in third, are still strong favourites for the title after they beat Bar 19 FC 9-1 away.  Hampton Road Social Club still fancy runners up spot after they beat the Oxford 5-3 and Fireplace Superstore pulled of the Division's result of the day when beating Fylde Construction FC 2-1 to go second.  Real Burlington beat Pulcinellas Reserves 4-3 at Commonedge, The Loft FC and Metrostars finished at 1-1 and finally bottom club SPS FC were trounced 10-2 at home by Trades & Social FC.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 22nd 2009The village of Wrea Green was this morning's venue.  The home side were taking on Blackpool Rangers FC in the Premier Division of the BFSFA out by the duckpond.  The teams were facing each other for the first time ever.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 22nd 2009

After spending many season's plodding along in the lower Divisions Wrea Green FC finally came good in the 2006/07 campaign when they stormed to the Division 3A title without losing a single league game.  They ended up nine points clear of second placed Mythop Leisure FC.  They almost made it a league and Cup double but it wasn't to be as Division 3B side Ward Heating FC beat them 1-0 in the Division 3 Cup final at the ground of Blackpool Wren Rovers FC.

The BFSFA was then stunned as the side were promoted directly into the Premier Division.  Many, including myself, thought it to be a step too far but in their first season they proved their doubters wrong by having a decent season of consolidation in which they finished ninth after gaining five wins and four draws.

This season, and having played nine games the team are currently in eighth.  The manager who had to suffer all of the ups and downs in the Division 3 days, Dennis Halliday, is still in charge.  They started the season brilliantly when going six unbeaten.  The run included a win against the Devonshire Arms and a draw against Layton Institute.  However, they were then hammered 7-0 in Round 3 of the Gledhill Cup by Pulcinellas and haven't won since.  Six games without defeat followed by six games without a win.  That's Sunday football.

Today's opponents Blackpool Rangers FC were playing their first ever fixture on the famous village green.  After joining the BFSFA as a successful junior football side they immediately won promotion when finishing as Division 3B runners up to Progress Property Management FC.  The following season they went unbeaten in the league when running away with Division 2A, winning the title by 21 points, one of the biggest winning margins in Sunday football history.  Last season they finished runners up in Division 1 behind the Crescent FC.  They'd reached the Premier Division after only three seasons losing only two league games along the way.  A creditable achievement indeed.

As we near the end of February the team have been beaten only twice in the top Division.  Those defeats came against last season's champions Quilligans FC and Poulton FC.  They've picked up four wins including notable scalps against Devonshire Arms, Northern Care and Pulcinellas.  John Miles' team are going very well in their fist season in the Prem.  This morning the team were in sixth with games in hand on four of the five sides above them.  They currently have five games in hand on leaders Quilligans with a gap of eleven points.  Cup interest this season has been ended by Quilligans who knocked them out of the Gledhill after a replay and last week they were well beaten 4-1 by the same side in the opening round of the Premier Division Cup.

Despite having many players to call upon all too often they've struggled to get more than twelve to turn up on a Sunday morning resulting in the manager having to turn out which isn't good.  In addition they've currently been without a recognised keeper in recent weeks.

It's been another dry week across the Fylde Coast this week and the often boggy pitch at Wrea Green was in good condition.  It was cold and dry with a light breeze.  The referee today was Mr Mark Ayre. Prior to today's match a minutes silence was respectfully observed for Fleetwood marine Daz Smith who was killed by the 'freedom hating' Taleban in the foreign fields of Afghanistan just over a week ago.  Wrea Green FC kicked off playing down the slope in their green kit.

The first half was full of incident and an attractive game for the neutral.  Both sides had some good spells of pressure but both keepers were in good form and kept their respective opposing strikers at bay.  Midway through the half Wrea Green forced a succession of corners.  In the video below they again went close.  Ranger's manager John Miles great gob wakes up the sleepy village as he berated his defenders.

Final score :  Wrea Green FC 1 – 6 Blackpool Rangers FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 22nd 2009

This was a very entertaining game that was enjoyed by spectators and curious passers by respectively.  Well refereed by Mr Ayre.  The scoreline didn't reflect the game.  Don't get me wrong, Rangers deserved to score six and maybe more but Wrea Green's offensive play deserved far more than the one goal they notched up.

A memorable first half full of goalmouth incident saw the score level at half time mainly thanks to some great saves by both keepers.  In the second period Wrea Green were still fast asleep when Floyd scored and when Beattie scored his second there was little chance of a fight-back.  Craig Frankle was outstanding in the first half for Wrea Green and there were further performances of note from Scholesy, Dickinson and Evans.

At the back they play a high defensive line but when they watch Match of the Day they'll see that they were vulnerable throughout to pacy strikers when going backwards from the halfway line through a boggy pitch.

As for Rangers they maintained their patience through the long period in the first half when the goal wouldn't come.  Even without talisman Chris Cairns and Joe Booth they have a lot of talent in the squad.  Tobin and Beattie create so many opportunities throughout the game that they're always going to create good goal-scoring chances.  If they can get  their best team out every week then they still have a chance of the title.

Excellent performances this morning from Lee Tobin who created many of the goals, Sean Bimpson in the centre and Floyd upfront.  Casson's fifteen minute goal blitz showed his class in front of goal.  Woods in goals looked competent throughout.  Today's Man of the Match went to Marc Beattie.  He's had a long spell of injuries and suspensions but today he looked to be back to his best.  His great work-rate on a sticky energy sapping pitch showed that he's now back to full fitness and his confidence in front of goal is returning.  He was unfortunate not to score a couple more this morning.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 15th 2009.There were many big games across the Fylde Coast this morning in both league and Cup but Sunday football wouldn't exist without teams who simply turn out for the love of the game.  This morning at Commonedge Road the bottom club in the Alliance, SPS FC, were taking on Metrostars FC looking for only their third win of the season.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 15th 2009.

As we near the end of another harsh Fylde Coast winter the Sunday football season enters its final phase with many teams still fancying their chances of picking up honours across the various leagues and Cup competitions.  Whilst the medals and plaudits end up in the deserved hands of the few the majority of Sunday footballers end up with nothing but memories of approximately thirty hard fought games played in all kinds of foul weather on pitches more befitting of the Somme.  Winning and drawing more than you lose is perhaps the most the majority of clubs can hope for.

For a small number of clubs each season constant defeat combined with the rain and mud is too much to bear and they fall by the wayside like weary soldiers in battle.  Next Sunday sees the final Sunday of the winter.  If you've been with us since August through to February and you're playing for a club in the bottom six of your Division with few points on the board then at least take heart that you're a real man and ultimately a better person.  (It's a bit flowery this week).

John Chapman's SPS FC are one such club.  Every season, a club has to finish bottom of the BFSFA and at this stage it very much looks like it will either be SPS FC or St Annes FC who end up with the wooden spoon.  Whatever happens they at least can take some consolation that they're not the worst.  In the 2004/05 season AFC Moghul finished bottom without a win and with only two draws to their name.  In the following season the Tesco Sports & Social Club FC finished bottom with only one win and three points.

SPS FC are mainly a 'works team' from the Printing firm on the Squires Gate Industrial Estate who simply turn up for the love of the game.  They intend to keep the playing staff 'in house' rather than recruiting outsiders but this becomes more difficult as time goes by.  They started their career in the Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Alliance with eleven straight defeats which included a 13-0 pasting by the Fleetwood Car Centre in the second Round of the Gledhill after they'd received a first round bye.  They had to wait until October 19th to record their first win which came after they beat Real Burlington FC 2-1 away from home.  Losing 10-2 and 13-1 to title favourites FC Matrix only temporarily reduced their enthusiasm as did a recent 13-1 hammering by Automedon FC.  Last time out they were beaten 8-0 by Pulcinellas Reserves FC.  As previously stated their rivals for the wooden spoon are St Annes FC.  Earlier in the season they lost 8-0 to them but back in November they took revenge when picking up only their second win of the season thanks to a 4-3 victory.  In the opening round of the Division 3 Cup they were knocked out 3-1 by C&G Electrical FC.

Today's opponents were Chris Paul's Metrostars FC who'd beaten them 4-1 back in December.  Metrostars FC are competing in their third season of Sunday football and once again they face another season on the bottom rung in 2009/10.  In their first season they finished in eleventh and last season they took a step backwards in finishing in twelfth.  This season has at last seen signs of improvement, especially in defence.  This morning's league table showed the club in seventh and a strong finish could possibly see them finish as high as fifth which if recent history is anything to go by may be good enough to get them a place in Division 3A.  Last season the team scored sixty-four goals which was only two less than Layton Institute Juniors who finished in fourth.  However, the eighty-seven thay they conceded at the other end was not far off four per game which isn't good enough if you're to climb out of this difficult division.

In the run up to Christmas they picked up ten points from twelve in a decent run but the new year has seen a dip in form.  After a first round bye they too were knocked out in the second round 4-1 by the now defunct CTK FC.  In the first round of the Divisional Cup they knocked out St Annes FC on penalties but last week they were eliminated in Round 2 by one of the favourites Foulds Metals FC 4-2.  A new sponsorship deal is supposedly in the offing with Poulton Kebab shop 'The Best' which will see the club renamed as 'Metrostars 'The Best' FC' so an overall improvement in form is hastily required if they're to live up to their new name.

It's been another very cold but generally dry week along the Coast this week.  There was rain in the air at Commonedge Road this morning with a bit of a breeze but it was thankfully a little milder than late. The overcast conditions were not conducive to the best of photographs.  SPS FC had moved to Commonedge after having had a number of postponements at Cottam Hall.  The referee today was once again Mr Matk Bates (I'm stalking him) who I expect was in for a reasonably easy game with both of these sides currently in the top three of the Division's Fair Play table.  At 11:04am we were underway with Metrostars FC in the black and red kicking off towards the cricket club.

SPS FC are an example to all Sunday football teams.  Although at the bottom of the league they had fifteen men warming up at 10:40 raring to go.  In contrast, their opponents Metrostars looked a disorganised rabble with little sign of any of them until about 10:50.  Only ten of them could be bothered to turn up this morning and manager Chris Paul was sick.  The rest were apparently wooing WAGS on Valentine's weekend with no sense of priority.  As a result we only had one linesman.

Metrostars started well and had the advantage of the cold South Westerly wind.  They fortuitiously took the lead on ten minutes when a Phil Dilworth pass back was horribly missed by keeper Andy Threlfall and the ball bobbled onwards and into the net.  0-1.

On 25 minutes SPS FC persistence paid off.  A fast flowing move upfield and a good interchange of passes set the winger free on the right hand side.  A dangerous cross into the box was spilled by Clifford and Liam Giles showed good composure in waiting for the ball to drop before volleying it in.  1-1.

Final score : SPS FC 3 – 3 Metrostars FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday February 15th 2009.

This match was a great advert for lower league Fylde Coast Sunday Football and the outcome was anybody's guess until the final whistle.  The lead changed three times and we had a last minute equaliser.

Few, if any would have denied SPS FC at least a point this morning.  They're not as bad as they think they are and are just short of confidence.  You can see it in players when opponents equalise or take the lead that there's a sense of, 'Here we go again' but to be fair they stuck at it today and there was a growing sense of collective self-belief.  A good effort from the Chapman brothers and Liam Giles impressed with his work rate, running off the ball and two quality goals.  Phil Dilworth at the back won a lot of ball, showed composure and thoughtful distribution and worked tirelessly throughout and these were the reasons he was awardeed the Teamsport90 Man of the Match award.

A disappointing day for Metrostars FC who still thought they would win today despite having only ten players.  In reality, they were rather fortunate to take a point.  They created little in the second half and were gifted two of their goals.  Credit to the ten men that showed.  They had to work hard to get the point and almost went away with all three.  Could do better.

A good performance from Woodcock at the back.

We'll add more details to this article as we get them;

The following comes from the BBC website…

Afghanistan death marine is named

Darren Smith
Marine Smith was the 144th British military casualty of the conflict

A Royal Marine killed in northern Helmand province in Afghanistan has been named by the Ministry of Defence.

Darren Smith, 27, from X-ray Company, 45 Commando, died while being flown to hospital. He had been shot in an area south west of Sangin on Saturday.

He was part of a patrol supporting a bomb disposal team. He became the 144th UK casualty since the 2001 invasion.

Marine Smith, who was from Fleetwood, Lancashire, had been based at Forward Operating Base Nolay.

'Natural talent'

An MoD statement said: “He was the epitome of a young Royal Marine; enthusiastic, hardworking, fiercely loyal to his friends and very brave. He carried the light machine gun, and was always at the front of his Troop, leading the patrol on operations against the Taleban.

“'Daz' was enormously popular with all of the other members of X-ray Company. He was a young man at the start of his career in the Royal Marines, but he already had a reputation for hard work and high professional standards. He was intelligent and trustworthy and had a natural talent that promised much for the future.

“He was a keen footballer and had trialled for Everton, Manchester City and Blackpool, but Liverpool was the team he supported. Even when he was deployed on operations he tried hard never to miss a game.”

Lieutenant Colonel Jim Morris Royal Marines, Commanding Officer, 45 Commando Group, said:

“The loss of Marine Daz Smith has reverberated with great sadness around 45 Commando Group. Brave, determined, modest yet fun-loving and full of life, he was always in the thick of the action whether on patrol or in his off-duty moments.

“He had an extremely bright future ahead of him and was viewed as one of the great talents in his Company.”

He is the seventh British serviceman to die in Afghanistan so far this year.

Ex Alliance player Darren 'Daz' Smith dies in Afghanistan.

Fleetwood lad Daz Smith played for Jollies FC for six seasons.  The team reached their peak in the 2003/04 season when playing as the Old Vic FC.  They won the Premier Division by four points ahead of Mammas FC losing only once all season.  They were particularly impressive on their own pitch where they won all ten league games.  They also pulled off a famous double when winning the Gledhill Cup Final at Bloomfield Road on the evening of Friday May 7th 2004.

Darren Smith played a major role in both successes when he formed an excellent strike partnership with Graham Parker.  He'll be especially remembered in the BFSFA for his performance in the Gledhill Cup Final when he scored a dramatic winner in extra time to give the Old Vic FC a 4-3 win in perhaps the most exciting final in the competition's rich history.

Sportspy Reports Extra - Saturday February 7th 2009.Many of you wont be interested in this but I wanted to get the article online for posterity.  It was a trip down memory lane last weekend as Darwen FC hosted AFC Blackpool in what could have been Darwen FC's final ever game.  The last time I visited Darwen's Anchor Ground was as a teenager in the 1974/75 season.  On that day Darwen FC needed only a point to win the Lancashire Combination and opponents Blackpool Mechanics FC needed to win.  A crowd of over 1,600 turned up to watch and I was one of them.

Sportspy Reports Extra - Saturday February 7th 2009.

Back in the Seventies, I and a group of pals, used to watch Blackpool Mechanics FC regularly in the Lancashire Combination.  They had a really good team back then with players such as the Roach brothers, Derek Armstrong, Dominic Fagioli and John Streetley who up until recently was still refereeing in the Sunday Alliance.  I was still at Highfield School and by a stroke of good fortune Blackpool Mechanics FC played in the same colours as the school, green and black, so the scarf served two purposes.

Towards the end of the 1974/75 season Mechanics were going well and needed to beat Darwen FC away on the last day of the season which was a Sunday in order to be champions.  Home side Darwen FC only required a point to win the league so it was a massive game.  We were invited to go along and watch on the team coach which was quite something at the time for a twelve year old.

Mechanics used to get crowds of about seventy/eighty back in those days so it was quite a shock when we got to the Anchor Ground.  The town had heard that Blackpool were bringing lots of supporters with them so that combined with the importance of the game brought a crowd of over 1,600 on to Darwen's impressive ground which had stands all around it.

Disappointingly for Mechanics the match finished at 2-2 thanks to a heartbreaking late penalty for Darwen.  Back in those days football hooliganisms was becoming trendy at all levels of the game.  What sticks in my mind is that after the match a local thug threatened me with violence if I didn't hand over my black and green Mechanics/Highfield school scarf.  I'd like to say that I struck him to the ground but instead, I meekly handed it over.  After all I was only twelve and he must have been at least seventeen and 14 stone (The culprit gets older and bigger with each telling of that story).

Darwen FC are one of Lancashire's oldest clubs with a rich history.  They were established back in 1875 and once played in the first Division of the football league.  They reached the semi-final of the FA Cup once and the semi-finals on three occasions where they lost to Aston Villa FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.  In 1932 they reached the third round and pulled a glamour tie away at Arsenal.  Four of their past players received caps for England.

These days the club is at a low-point in its history and said to be massively in debt.  Last week in the High Court, London they narrowly avoided a winding up order.  It was a distinct possibility that last Saturday's game against Blackpool Mechanics FC, now unfortunately re-named as AFC Blackpool, could have been the last ever game for the famous club.  Thirty-four years on from the last occasion, a lot older and without a scarf, I took a trip down memory lane to watch the same fixture.

Coming off the M65 I was caught in match traffic but not for the Darwen game.  Blackburn Rovers FC were hosting Aston Villa only a couple of miles away but I wasn't tempted for a second to go and watch that.  No, last Saturday was a day for true grassroots football.

Below are a few pictures that I took during the game.  It was bitterly cold with the remnants of the recent snow still lying on the fells in the background and on the surrounding terrraces.  The Anchor Ground, which lies in the shadow of the Crown Paints factory, had clearly fallen on hard times over the intervening years with two of the stands having been knocked down.  Walking to the game there seemed to be more people in the Crown Paints Social Club than in the ground.  The crowd was bigger than normal thanks to the current circumstances.  In a game of few chances AFC Blackpool won the match 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wood.  I captured the goal on video.  It's not a great video and it's not very long but it could be important historically as it may have been the last ever competitive goal seen at the famous Lancashire venue.

Hopefully, the people of Darwen can appreciate the history of this famous club and turn things around.  Besides, it's currently AFC Blackpool's local derby.  The return trip was well worth it after all of those years but if you're reading this and you know who took my scarf I'd like it back with no hard feelings.
