Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 8th 2009.

Last season AFC Additions finished fourth in Division 2B and as a result of the Divisional restructuring they were moved across to Division 2A.  The move has seen them face a whole host of new teams at different venues.  So far so good as the team have had a great 2008/09 season.  Going into March they're favourites to take the 2A title.  Currently they sit just one point behind leaders FC Eden but they have an all important game in hand.  The race for the title with Eden is a close one.  The form table on the Fyldesport sister site shows both sides having taken maximum points from the last six league games.  However, both of the main contenders are still to face each other and surely it will be these two important league games that will decide the destiny of the Division 2A Championship.   In the Gledhill Cup manager Graham Quinn's men received a bye in Round 1, hammered Bispham Juniors in Round 2 but narrowly lost to Premier Division outfit Blackpool Rangers in Round 3.  They've reached the last eight of this particular competition by whipping Great Eccleston 5-0 in the opening round and by beating Frenchman's Cove 4-1 in Round 2.  A win today would shorten their odds considerably on pulling off the double.

Today's opponents in the last eight were Spindles FC who were last season's Division 3B Champions on goal difference ahead of Burlington FC.  They had a top start to life in the higher Division but a creditable run in this season's Lancashire Sunday Trophy has set them back in the league programme.  Approaching mid March they've still only managed to get ten matches under their belts so they're in for a busy finish.  At present the team are in eighth place but after having already drawn three and lost three their chances of a top five finish are now unlikely.  Manager Matt Clarke has a good squad (When they're available) but as I've said not playing regularly due to poor weather and unfit pitches appears to have knocked them off their rhythm.  In the first round of the Gledhill they pulled off a big result when knocking MA2 FC out 4-2.  In Round 2 they thrashed FC Newton 5-0 but in Round 3, and despite being at the top of their form, they were narrowly beaten by holders Quilligans FC 2-1.  Spindles FC reached today's quarter final by beating fellow 2A side Waterloo Sports & Social 3-2 in the opening round and by beating Squirrel 3-2 in Round 2.

All set then for a very entertaining Cup tie with both sides well capable of reaching the semi-final.  The Fylde Coast witnessed a temporary return to winter this morning with the strong westerly gale making it uncomfortable for players and supporters alike.  Still, it was again dry with sunny spells.  Today's official was Stuart Berry and at 11am AFC Additions in their light blue strip kicked off.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 8th 2009.

Unlike at Commonedge the pitches at Broadwater were not facing directly into the wind which therefore gave neither side no real advantage.  However, it played a part in Addition's second goal.  A swirling high ball was played into the box.  It has to be said that the Splindles defence was hesitant and all at sea.  The ball was allowed to bounce and in the picture below Perkes still managed to control the ball, hold off the keeper, turn and shoot home for his second whilst the defenders just stood and admired it.  2-0.

Final score :  AFC Additions 4 – 1 Spindles FC.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 8th 2009.

This turned out to be a disappointing game for the neutral as after thirty minutes it was all but over as the home side raced into a deserved 3-0 lead.  Credit to the eleven Spindles' men who turned out this morning but they struggled to get into the game.  Manager Clarke was frustrated as he had seventeen confirmed in midweek but for whatever reason a number went missing this morning finding something more important to do than playing for a Divisional Cup semi-final place.  Today's Spindles were a shadow of the side that gave Quilligans a run for their money earlier in the season.  An excellent performance from Scott Park who ran his socks off and another good effort from Mo and Matt Howard who also never gave up.

I like AFC Additions, they've been together as a squad for a good number of years and this season it looks as though they'll finally get some honours.  They have no superstars but they have an excellent attitude and work rate.  The team spirit is clear to see and if you're from FC Eden reading this you're going have to work hard over the next couple of Sundays in the two league fixtures against them if you're going to take the title.

AFC Additions will now face Fleetwood Cricket Club FC in a fierce local derby for a place in the final.  Alan Perkes always does well in front of the Fyldesport camera and today was no different as he bagged another four goals this morning.  Simon Beavers is a big player for them in midfield.  I was ten miles down the promenade before realising I'd left the prize football and Man of the match Trophy at home but if I had remembered it then it would have gone to Scott Bradford for his work ethic.  He's a good foil for Perkes who's pace and hard running will always create chances for his strike partner.  The Teamsport90 Man of the match goes to Scott Bradford.

Mythop Leisure FC's 1-0 home win against North West Kitchens took them through to the semi-finals of this season's Division 2 Cup.  They'll be joined by three of the strong favourites.  Mythop will face FC Eden in the semi who beat Marshall Court 9-1.  Up at Broadwaters Fleetwood Cricket Club beat Brun Grove 3-1 and AFC Additions comfortably beat an out of sorts Spindles FC 4-1.

It was interesting day in the Premier Division where Quilligans went seven points clear at the top of the table after beating Poulton 2-1 away in the game of the day.  It's still any one from five as in-form Devonshire Arms were brought back down to earth with a bump as they went down 4-1 at home to Pulcinellas.  Blackpool Rangers are still going very well in third after they beat the Layton Institute 4-1.  Northern Care's recent poor form continued as they crashed 7-3 at home to Hydronics.

In Division 1 all Halfway House and Ward Heating can do is keep winning and hope for the best.  Leaders Fylde Coast Gates were without a game and both of their title rivals did exactly that with a win apiece.  Halfway House stay second after winning 3-1 away at the Golden Eagle.  Ward Heating faced fellow in-form side Shovels FC at the Edge but Ward showed their class with a 4-2 win.  It's now a three horse race for the title.  Fleetwood Car Centre had a good 3-1 home win against Bloomfield Vets.

The top two in Division 2A were involved in Cup action and both reached the semis.  Their day was made all the sweeter as their only rivals for the title both lost and in effect ended their chances.  Waterloo Sports & Social lost 3-2 at home to West Coast Tackle Postal and in one of the best performances of the day the Links Hotel beat Great Eccleston 2-1 away.  The Squirrel were held to a 2-2 draw away at Highfield Social and Claremont Cons are in sixth tonight after their 4-3 home win against Rossall Tavern.

The Fairhaven had an opportunity to go top of 2B this morning but they were beaten 4-1 at home by FC Excelsior.  Frenchman's Cove are seventh after they beat FC Talbot 2-1 and St Annes Ex Service upset the form book by beating Progress Sports & Social 2-1 away from home.  AFC Marton picked up a much needed 3-2 win against bottom club Old England.

MA2 FC are back on top of 3A after their emphatic 8-0 win against Walkabout Celtic.  Foulds Metals could only draw 1-1 against the Falcon which could be crucial as only goal difference separates them from the leaders and they've played three games more.  The Farmers are up to fourth after their 5-1 home win against the Stable Bar and FC Gretone look to be finishing strongly after they picked up a 3-0 win over the Saddle Inn.  C&G Electrical's 1-0 win against Layton Institute Juniors took them to third bottom.  FC Newton and Teamsport played out a 1-1 draw.

No more bets on FC Matrix as their 4-1 away win at current leaders Hampton Road Social Club made them dead certs for the title.  Another of their rivals Fireplace Superstore lost 2-1 at home to the Oxford and Fylde Construction's hopes for a top three finish took a knock as they were beaten 3-1 away at Pulcinellas Reserves.  Metrostars had a morale boosting 8-2 win against Bar 19 FC and Trades & Social beat Automedon 5-4.  St Annes FC had a good win against the loft who they beat 3-1 and SPS FC took their fourth point of the season off the Real Burlington in a 2-2 draw.

Disciplinary notes.

Disciplinary notes. After going through the full and proper process the BFSFA committee have ruled on the following matters.  In their 8-0 defeat to Ward Heating FC on 15/02/09 FC Kingsfield fielded a Premier Division player who was without a game. They deliberately falsified the teamsheet to hide the fact.  Three points deducted.  Recently, FC Excelsior were thrown out of the Division 2 Cup for fielding an ineligible player and deliberately falsifying the team sheet.  In the 2-1 defeat to Brun Grove FC on 25/01/09 they repeated their indiscretion.  Three points deducted.  Tables updated on the sister site.  Keep it fair, keep it honest and respect the BFSFA.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 1st 2009.

You're probably aware that I'm not much of a fan of the Premier Division and Division 1 Cup competitions for a number of reasons.  The smallest football league in the world is the Isles of Scilly Football League that only has two teams, the Garrison Gunners and the Woolpcack Wanderers.  They play seventeen Sunday league games against each other a season as well as three Cup competitions.  Apart from the BFSFA Premier Division and Division 1 Cup competitions these are the only known Cup competitions on the planet where you don't get the opportunity to take on a team that you wouldn't ordinarily face in league action.

In addition, there are only ten teams in Division 1 at present due to Bispham Juniors FF FC and CTK FC folding and as a result this has allowed one of the teams to reach the semi final without kicking a ball.  Therefore, the two competitions don't hold much interest for me and the few other neutrals out there.  Even a number of clubs in the Premier Division often refer to it as the Consolation Cup.  I'm not deliberately trying to be controversial but maybe it's time for a re-think.

At the Thornton Sports Centre Hydronics FC were hosting Red Rose Catering FC.  The teams have already fulfilled both league fixtures against each other.  The first match finished 2-2 but the week after Red Rose beat Hydronics 6-1.  Quilligans FC aside Red Rose have the best Cup record in Sunday football in recent seasons.  In 2004/05 they won the Division 2 Cup and in 2005/06 they won the Division 1 Cup.  In 2006/07 they reached the final of both the Gledhill Cup and the Premier Division Cup and last season they again reached the final of the Premier Division Cup.  This season they've reached the last eight of the Gledhill and this morning they were again attempting to reach the final of the Divisional Cup for the fifth season in a row.

At Beacon Hill High School the Devonshire Arms FC were in Cup action against Poulton SFC who won this competition in the 2006/07 season.  As of writing both of these teams are joint favourites to take the Premier Division title if they hold their nerve as its in their own hands.  The teams had met once in the league back in late August when Poulton beathe Devvy 7-4 so the home side had something to prove this morning.  Coming out of this tie with confidence still high was perhaps just as important as progressing through to the semi-finals.

At 7am it was ovecast with heavy drizzle, by kick off time we had clear blue skies and despite the temperature still nowhere near ten degrees it was good to feel the warm sun on your face once again.

I started off at the Sports Centre watching the first half of the Hydronics v Red Rose tie before moving on to Beacon Hill High School for the Devonshire Arms v Poulton game.  Here are a few pictures from both matches.

1-0 was how it ended up and once again 'Cup Team' Red Rose Catering FC reach the semi-final of the Divisional Cup.  It was then a quick dash to Beacon Hill High School to see 40 minutes of the second half between the Devonshire Arms FC in the tangerine and Poulton SFC – also in the Divisional Cup Quarter Finals.  As I arrived I was just in time to see Poulton bring it back to 2-1 from the penalty spot not long into the second half.

One minute the ball bounces dangerously in the Devvy area and literally fifteen seconds later it's in the back of the Poulton net.  A ball through the middle was missed by the defender and lee Feehan poked it past the onrushing Kevin Kennerley.  Tom Porter's chase is a hopeless one as the ball rolls into the net.  3-1.
