Sportspy Extra – Saturday April 11th 2009.

Sportspy Extra - Saturday April 11th 2009.Easter Saturday and it was the big game of the season as the Seasiders travelled to Preston North End FC in search of three points that would hopefully go a long way towards guaranteeing them safety from relegation.  More live video and a couple more pictures now added.

I decided to go on the train today just like the good old days and bumped into Les Hewitt – Ex Bloomfield Vets FC – still a little tired after his 4am post round.

Deep, deep, deep undercover.  Just before the police shut the pub doors and marched the mob out of the back I slipped the cordon and took off for the ground.  This is Moor Park avenue.  After night matches in the seventies this was one of the most interesting places to be as the police escorted us back to the station.  Pitch black, sirens, screaming, alsations straining on the leash, police horses in your face and ominous shadows in the undergrowth throwing bottles and rocks – happy days!

Final score : Preston North End FC 0 – 1 Blackpool FC

Sportspy Extra - Saturday April 11th 2009.

The misery of the comprehensive home defeat earlier in the season is now forgotten after the Seasiders took all three points.  100% effort from all the players was the key to the victory.  Preston hit the upright from a free-kick in the first half and had a goal disallowed late on but overall they didn't create enough. Blackpool won everything in the air and on the ground, almost always first to the loose ball – they were really up for it and the win was well deserved.  Fingers crossed the win puts us safe for another season in the Championship in 2009/10.

Honours latest - April 2009.As we enter the final few weeks of the season nothing is yet settled and the 'Fyldesport.com Honours Board' accessible via the left hand menu remains empty.  But who's looking the most likely?

Unlike last season the Premier Division title looks like going down to the final couple of weeks of the season.  Now it's down to four sides.  Quilligan's along with Blackpool Rangers are the teams in form over the last six matches both taking thirteen points apiece.  Poulton and Devonshire Arms are still very much in contention.  Adding to the interest is the recent resurgence of Hydronics and Red Rose Catering who are striking fear into the top four.  Northern Care, Pulcinellas and Layton are their usual inconsistent selves and the current status of the Crescent FC may have an impact on the table if they fold.  They're currently suspended by the LFA due to the non-payment of fines.  Hopefully, this situation will be resolved and 'football' will decide the most interesting and exciting Premier Division title race in years.  Quilligans will face Red Rose Catering FC in the Premier Division Cup on April 19th.  The two teams met in last season's close Gledhill Final and may do so again.  On Wednesday evening Red Rose face Division 1 team Halfway House which promises to be a very interesting fixture.  The following night Quilligans are up againsty Layton Institute in the second semi-final and after this morning's comprehensive win they look to be strong favourites to reach the final yet again.

Honours latest - April 2009.

In Division 1 Fylde Coast Gates FC and Halfway House FC will finish in the top two.  Currently, Gates are top by a point.  Both have two games left to play and have exactly the same goal difference.  Gates have to play FC Kingsfield who are still without a win as well as Golden Eagle.  Halfway House also have to play FC Kingsfield and FC Loco.  That one point lead may prove crucial.  The bookies raked in a fortune on the Division 1 Cup as unfancied Northern Care Reserves FC and FC Loco won through to the final on April 18th at Fleetwood Town FC – Anybody's game.

Honours latest - April 2009.

Division 2A is also a two horse race between AFC Additions and FC Eden.  The two of them will also face each other in the final of the Division 2 Cup.  In recent week's they played the two league fixtures and honours were even with three points apiece.  FC Eden have the points on the board.  With three left to play they're four points clear of AFC Additions but they have two games in hand.  Both teams face difficult fixtures in the run-in so my advice is to keep your money in your pocket.

Honours latest - April 2009.

In Division 2B the bookies have stopped taking bets on Fleetwood Cricket Club FC who only need five points from their last five games to take the title.  A rare defeat on penalties this morning crushed hopes of a league and Cup double but if they can bounce back from that disappointment it won't be long until they're pictured on the honours board.  As for runners up spot it's between FC Excelsior and the Fairhaven FC who have both been scuppered with points deductions for fielding ineligible players.

Honours latest - April 2009.

Division 3A has been a two horse race for a month or so and it's now almost certain that MA2 FC and Foulds Metals FC will finish in the top two.  MA2 FC require six points from five matches to take the title and Foulds Metals require three more points from four matches to finish runners up.

Honours latest - April 2009.

In Division 3B FC Matrix look dead certs to take the title.  They require only nine points from the final seven games and after this morning's Cup exit they can now concentrate on achieving it.  As for runners up position it's between Fireplace Superstore FC and Hampton Road Social Club FC.  Both are level on 54 points and both have three games still left to play.  However, the Fireplace are the team in form after having won four in a row but it's still too close to call.

As for the Division 3 Cup the Loft FC have reached the final.  Their opponents are yet to be decided.  An LFA hearing this week will decide on whether or not Tiles FC will be re-instated.  Stay tuned.

Born on August 23rd 1934 Peter Collins has never been far away from football.  In the 1950/51 season he managed St John Vianney FC Under 17's and apart from a two-year stint in the armed services he's never been too far away from it since.  By his own admission he was never much of a footballer and his own playing career was cut short through injury at the age of twenty-eight.

In the 1965/66 season his team Howcroft Hotspurs FC played a number of friendlies and in the following season they joined the inaugural Sunday Football league on the Fylde Coast.  Two season's later they changed their name to Sands Casino FC and became one of the most successful sides of their day winning the league title and two Gledhill Cup finals in the late sixties and early seventies.  After working at the Hawker Aircraft factory at squires Gate with 4,000 fellow employees he later carried on manufacturing aircraft components at Stargate Engineering Limited and Sycamore Development Limited.

In the 1967/68 season he joined the BFSFA committee and he's been on it ever since.  Peter started as press secretary before moving on to being the registrations' secretary before becoming the league secretary many years ago.  By my reckoning he's had to sit through at least 840 league management and league secretaries' meetings so if nothing else he deserves an award for that alone.  In addition he joined Blackpool FC's commercial side before later becoming the club's long serving secretary.

BFSFA Hall of fame - Peter Collins.

A few years back he received the LFA's 50-year service award and there are not too many that are given that honour.  Even fewer people have football grounds named after them but not so long ago the old Prebond pitch was renamed Collins Park in recognition of his service to Sunday Football.  It's now the spiritual home of Fylde Coast Sunday football and with the valued input from Fleetwood Town FC it's rapidly becoming one of the best Sunday Football venues on the Coast.

Despite nearing the ripe old age of 75 he still looks fit and in better shape than many Sunday footballers a third of his age.  He has absolutely no desire to put his feet up and besides his busy role in local football he's also the President of Marton Institute as well as being the club's concert secretary.  Peter thinks the best thing about Sunday Football is the 'football' and rain or shine, hot sun or freezing cold there's rarely a Sunday when he's not out and about watching.  On the downside he regrets the rise in indiscipline and poor attitudes and behaviours of players and supporters towards referees and sees this as a real problem of concern that may end up having a serious effect on the future of local football.

When not at home he likes nothing better than sunning himself in Southern Cyprus which he's grown to love in recent years.  Proving the old adage that it's never too late to learn he's also taken up Crown Green bowling – tough sport.  After all of his time in local football Mrs Collins is well used to the phone ringing and his regular absences on football related matters but everything's relative.  At one stage he ran four teams at the same time and she ended up washing the kit for all four.  Behind every great man is a kit washing football widow.

Thanks Peter from all of the many thousands of Sunday footballers (me included) to whom you've helped provide the opportunity to get out there and kick a football round every Sunday.  It's appreciated.  A worthy candidate for Hall of Fame I'm sure you'll agree – Peter Collins.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday April 5th 2009.

Last season's Division 3A title winners FC Eden are going really well in 2A and as the season nears its end they're in a two horse race for the title with AFC Additions.  On the previous two Sundays they've both met in league action and both picked up a win apiece which has made things very interesting at the top where FC Eden currently have a four point lead but AFC Additions have two games in hand.  FC Eden can't really afford to lose any of their remaining three matches and at the same time hope for the best.  It's also a decent bet that the two may end up facing each other in the final of this competition although today's opponents Mythop Leisure may have something to say about that.  In the Gledhill Roy Bingham''s side were knocked out in Round 2 by Premier Division side Poulton after they'd beaten AFC Marton in the opening round.  They'd reached this morning's semi-final by thumping Skye, Paris Casino and Marshall Court 6-0, 7-1 and 9-1 respectively.  Whatever happens, it's been another great campaign for FC Eden in the BFSFA in only their second season.

As for Mythop Leisure FC they finished a creditable fifth last season in Division 2B after being promoted from 3A the previous season.  In all honesty they've had a disappointing season based on pre-season expectations.  With games running out then perhaps sixth spot is the best they can achieve with a strong finish.  Currently, the side are down in ninth position with five games left to play in which they've still got to play three out of the top five sides.  Although they've never been hammered by anybody for a whole host of reasons they've never really challenged the leaders.  In the Gledhill thy lost to Matrix in the opening round and they'd reached today's semi-final after a first round bye and by beating West Coast Tackle Postal and North West Kitchens.

In the league FC Eden picked up all three points in a 4-1 away win on the first day of March and they're still to play the reverse fixture.  Today's referee was Graham Nixon and he was ably assisted by Ben Wiseman and John Corkwell.  The weather was calm, bright, dry and mild and at 11am FC Eden kicked off defending the changing room end in their blue strip.

On 83 minutes FC Eden finally made it safe with a killer third.  With Mythop having little choice but to throw men forward big gaps were appearing at the back.  A ball over the top sent Bingham clear down the right.  He unselfishly squared it for Craig Byrom but his slight hesitation allowed the keeper to block it.  However, the rebound fortuitiously fell back to Bingham who crashed it home.  3-0.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday April 5th 2009.

Unlike the Division 1 Cup semi-finals this was a game that went with the form-book.  Mythop gave it all they had but on the day they can have few complaints about being beaten by the better side.  They missed the trickery of Matt Rainbow upfront and all too often ran out of ideas when going forward.  Apart from Blant's headed near miss and a long range effort from Shaggy they rarerly threatened Milroy's goal.  Still, a good effort in reaching the last four and here's hoping for a decent finish to the season.

FC Eden looked strong throughout and desrbedly take their place in this season's final.  The early goal should have settled them down but misplaced passes in good positions stopped them stsmping their authority on this game much earlier.  Ryan Bingham was a handful throughout but today's Man of the Match sponsored by kit suppliers Teamsport 90 goes to FC Eden's Dale Williams who gave it 110% throughout in the sunshine on a hard pitch.  Always in the thick of things he was a constant thorn in Mythop's side.  After this morning's win on penalties against Fleetwood Cricket Club FC Eden will now play 2A rivals AFC Additions in the final.  The double is still ON for both !

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 29th 2009.

In the 2002/03 season Goodwins Paint & Body Shop FC joined the BFSFA when we had a very healthy eight Divisions.  They finished in seventh place but due to league restructuring they were moved up to Division 3A and changed their name and sponsor to the Cleveley's based accountants MA2 FC for the 2003/04 campaign and they've been in there ever since.  Frankly, they were a typical lower league side and in recent seasons they've finished in 8th (03/04), 9th (04/05), 12th (05/06), 9th (06/07) and 8th in 07/08.  Winning only 46 of the 140 league games played over the six year period represented an extremely lean period.

However, things have changed dramatically this season and as we reach the final furlong MA2 FC are on the brink of winning their first honours and with seven games left to play just four more wins will probably be enough for manager Pete Jenkinson and his team to take the Division 3A title which will go a long way to putting the dire struggle of the last six seasons behind them.

They've won seventeen of their eighteen league games losing only once to Saddle Inn FC back on August 20th.   Their only remaining rivals for the title, Foulds Metals, have already been beaten by them 4-2 earlier in the season and if they repeat the feat in the reverse fixture then they'll be well on their way to winning the title.  However, that won't be easy as was shown only a fortnight ago when they were knocked out of the Division 3 Cup by Foulds when they lost 3-1 at home in the quarter finals.  Gledhill Cup interest ended in Round 1 when they were beaten 4-2 at home by Spindles.

This morning's opponents were Farmers Arms FC who they narrowly beat 3-2 earlier in the season in the reverse fixture.  It's the first season in the BFSFA for this incarnation of the South Shore Pub's association with Sunday football.  It's not been calm waters for manager Gordon Mason who's off-field problems with funding and non-committed players have caused him to have one or two headaches.  But as we near the end of the 2008/09 season the Farmers are going along very nicely in fifth place.  They have six games left and a strong finish could yet still see them finish in third place.  The team are in very good form having won six out of the last seven games and they'll have been up for this one.

In the Gledhill Cup they received a first round bye.  In round 2 they knocked out C&G Electrical 2-1 but in round 3 they ran into Bloomfield Vets and despite an excellent effort they ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline.  In the Divisional Cup they were eliminated in round 1 by FC Gretone in a 5-2 defeat.  At one stage of the season the Farmers were on the brink of folding but the collective decision to carry on has been well worth it.

Ballam Road, Lytham is one of my favourite Sunday football venues especially at this stage of the season when the notoriously boggy pitch starts to dry out.  After an unsettled week of wind and rain the weather had finally becalmed.  A slight overnight frost had burned off to leave a gloriously calm spring morning with blue skies and warm sunshine.  The clocks had gone forward an hour and as usual there were a couple of tired looking individuals who had had only four hours sleep instead of the usual five.  Today's referee was sixteen year old James Fothergill.  He'd originally gone down as a favour to act as linesman but in the absence of a referee he stepped up to officiate in his first ever adult game.  11am we were underway with MA 2 FC in the red and blue kit defending the changing block end.

Just four minutes later and MA2 FC top scorer Peter Clarkson was on the scoresheet.  A ball over the top resulted in a big shout for off-side by the Farmers' defenders but the flag stayed down.  Clarkson pounced and rifled it home at the near post from the angle with his right foot.

After the half time interval the Farmers came out fired up firmply believing they were still in the match.  They created a top chance almost immediately when a cross into the box just evaded the outstretched boot of the attacker.  They then had a headed chance pictured below that just went over the bar and minutes later a cross to the far post found Blincow unmarked but he should have done better with his free header that went wide.  The Farmers played their best football of the game in this fifteen minute spell.

On 61 minutes MA2 FC scored the all important third goal.  Shocking defending by the Farmers from a Clarkson corner on the right allowed the ball to bounce twice before Phil Csesznyak hit an unstoppable half volley that gave both Brookes and the defender on the line no hope of stopping it.

Final score :  MA2 FC 4 – 0 The Farmers Arms FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 29th 2009.

This game was a little closer than the final scoreline suggested.  The visitors were more than holding their own before the penalty went in but when they conceded a second a few minutes later it was always going to be a big ask to come back into it.  The Farmers are a hard working team and now look to have a fairly settled twelve players who look organised.  Andy Scott remains a handful for defenders up front and Stuart lord showed occasional glimpses of what he can do.  They stay in fifth tonight and with fifteen points still left to play for a good effort could still se them finish higher.

Another great win for MA2 FC and an important three points that takes them six points clear at the top with two games in hand.  After this morning's defeat away at FC Gretone it now very much looks like Foulds Metals FC will have to now settle for runners up spot.  MA2 FC kept at it today.  Staying organised and maintaining their shape was the key to today's victory.  Relatively solid at the back and a good work rate in midfield laid the foundations for Peter Clarkson and Phil Csesznyak to torment the opposition defenders.  Another big performance from Clarkson who's too good for Division 3.  A goal and at least one assist resulted in him being awarded with the football and trophy for being Man of the Match.  MA2 FC are now guaranteed at least runners up spot and will almost certainly be playing Division 2 football for the first time next season.

The young referee James Fothergill did well.  He'll get even better as his confidence and presence increases.  I think he actually enjoyed it.  I did.
