Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 20th 2009.

Frenchman's Cove FC finished eighth last season in Division 2B after winning eleven and drawing three of their twenty-six league matches – a decent season for manager Paul Ronson and his squad.  This season, and following the demise of the ex Premier Division team of the same name the club have re-named as Layton Institute FC for the 2009/10 season.  They've had a good start under the new brand picking up seven points from the the first twelve available.  After an opening day defeat against one of the favourites, Highfield Social FC, they've gone on to put an unbeaten run together of five matches.  This included Gledhill Cup wins against AFC Ansdell Excelsior and the Falcon which has put them through to Round 3.

This morning's opponents were Bamber Bridge side AFC Brigg who play in the second Division of the Lancashire Evening Post Preston Sunday Football league.  Manager Shaun Smith's team had started with one win, a draw and a defeat that's left them sixth in the table at start of play. A 2-1 defeat to Euxton Corinthians FC also led to an early exit from the Challenge Cup – Preston's version of the Gledhill.

Another fine day for Sunday football – mild, bright, calm, dry and a good surface at Moor Park.  BFSFA referees' secretary Dave Connor was the man in charge.  At 11am we were underway with Brigg in the red & black kicking off.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 20th 2009.

In summary this was an extremely interesting fixture from start to finish.  Each club's respective league positions pointed to a close encounter and so it was with the outcome in doubt for almost ninety minutes.  Two evenly matched sides went toe to toe with each team having good spells of possession and goalmouth chances.  In the end one goal settled a fine Cup tie.  Well officiated by Mr Connor – the game was played in good spirit with no need for any cards.  Good luck to AFC Brigg in Round 3.  The Layton worked hard and they should do OK in Division 2B.   Great game.

Last week's visit to Fleetwood was purely from a neutral perspective but this week I have to declare an interest because when Blackpool FC are away or even when they're at home and not worth paying the admission fee due to playing poorly then Blackpool Wren Rovers FC are our first choice for a football fix on a Saturday afternoon.  Free admission is a bonus but not the main factor for attending.  For the last three and a bit seasons Wrens, in my humble opinion, have been one of the best amateur footballing sides we have on the Coast.  They entertain with an all out attack mentality.  If anything, they often play too much football on the edge of the opposing box and fail to kill teams off.  They literally 'football' opponents to death but currently, they're not scoring enough goals.

The legacy of ex manager Mark Senior was that he finally gave the younsters a chance and  ever since then they've never looked back.  I did have a concern at the beginning of last season when he left and took a couple of players with him but those concerns proved unfounded as new manager Dave Worthington ably supported by the same back room staff managed to retain many of the players, recruited wisely and were a whisker away from winning the title.  As with the season before they finished second and prior to that they finished in third so they're not too far away.  Although unashamedly biased I have to say that they've thrown it way rather than coming second to better teams.  Too many poor results at home late season against inferior bottom half sides have cost them dear.

This season, they've gain started strongly with many of the team still nowhere near 25.  The boy and I have watched about six of their first seven games including away trips to Lostock St Gerards and Garstang where they were rather unfortunate not to come way with more than a point but the usual problem of not putting the gloss on excellent possession cost them dear.  This morning they were fourth in the table four points behind rivals Charnock Richard but had a game in hand.  Opponents Stoneclough were down in eleventh after a mixed start that's seen them pick up two wins and two draws from their first seven games.  Last season they were one of only a handful of sides that denied Wrens a win as both matches ended in draws.  Stoneclough is near Kearsley just outside Bolton.  We went there for the last game of last season in May and like many of the venues in this league it's a well maintained ground offering a friendly welcome all within an hour of the tower.

A little gloomy for pictures this afternoon due to the overcast rainy conditions but warm, calm and muggy for the players on this mid September afternoon.  Mr Denton was todays official.  Blackpool Wren Rovers FC were in the red shirts.  Last week it was Fleetwood Town FC with 1,126 fans, this week it was School Road with about forty supporters.  Grass roots at its best.

Well, in the first half Wren's failed to live up to my build up.  They were disjointed and although they were reasonably solid at the back they unusually gave up possession to easily and lacked that incisive bite going forward.  However, shortly before the break they took the lead.  The key was patience.  An attack broke down and the ball came out to Methven.   He calmly switched it to Lewis Cook whos cross to the far post was nodded on by Duerden for Jack Sharples who made no mistake as he slotted it past the keeper.  1-0 and that's how it stayed until the break.

Despite bringing on three subs during the course of the second half and mixing it up a little Wrens still failed to find their usual rhythm and for once failed to dominate their opponents.  Credit to Stoneclough who gave an honest performance, worked really hard, played some good football and in all fairness few would have begrudged them a point.

If anything, Wrens were only slightly the better side. On a positive note they defended well and kept a clean sheet.  It's still early season and I still consider them good favourites for this Division.  Manager Worthington has lots of very good players on the books and with Tobin and Corless C to come back from injury he'll have a good number of options to consider – I'm sure he and his management team will pick the right combinations.  A hard earned three points in a game that last season they may have drawn.  Onwards and upwards.

Speak soon – speak clearly.

Speak soon - speak clearly. Many of our teams are involved in Lancashire Sunday Trophy action tomorrow both on the road and at home.  The BFSFA committee respectfully ask that ALL of our clubs call in the result and scorers as soon as practicable after the match has finished.  They also ask that if you get the answerphone you leave a clear and concise message.  All too often lately they've been met with incoherent ramblings from drunken club secretaries situated in rumbunctious public houses.  This, combined, with the ever worsening hearing of our ageing committee, is leading to some confusion – they don't want to know how unlucky you were or how your sick cat is getting on – just give the result and scorers then get off.  Thank you.

Great Eccleston FC have had a fantastic start to the season after winning seven and drawing five of their opening twelve matches.  That unbeaten start had left them joint top of Division 2A level on points with West Coast Tackle Postal who currently have a far superior goal difference.  Gledhill interest ended in Round 2 when after a 1st Round bye they were well beaten 5-0 by Division 1 side FC Matrix.  The side are still homeless and whilst the Council meets shortly to discuss the provision of new changing facilities the team are currently playing their home matches out of Boundary Park.

In contrast today’s opponents Claremont Cons FC were rock bottom of the table this morning with only four points having lost eight of their opening ten matches.  One of those defeats came against Great Eccleston back in October when they lost 5-2 at home.  They too went out in Round 2 of this season’s Gledhill Cup after losing 6-2 to Layton Institute in a replay after the first game finished at 4-4.

Due to the frost the game on the adjoining pitch between Old England and FC Talbot didn’t go ahead but although this pitch was a little crunchy at the start by kick off time of 11:15 referee Colin Reidy ruled it fit to play.  Initial relief for Great Eccleston FC who last kicked a ball in anger on November 1st.  Claremont in the yellow kicked off in very cold but bright and calm conditions.  The form book suggsted that Claremont Cons FC were 8/1 to win the match prior to kick off.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 13th 2009.

Few if any would have given Claremont Cons FC a prayer this morning and even their manager was non too confident prior to kick off.  Things looked bleak when they conceded a poor goal early doors but they showed some good resilience to steady the ship and at half time they were still in the game thanks to a little good fortune and some poor Great Eccleston finishing.  In the second period they kept plugging away and despite Great Eccleston bringing top scorer Ball off the bench they firstly got the equaliser before scoring the all important second on the break and another goal in the dying seconds in a similar manner.  Hopefully, this result can increase confidence for the second half of the season.

Great Eccleston FC may have been a little rusty after the long weather related absence but in the end they can have few complaints. Their opponents worked very hard and ultimately deserved the victory.  They missed too many chances and the defending for the three goals was frankly shambolic.  On the plus side they’re still unbeaten in the league and have every chance of winning it.

Good luck to Claremont in Round 2 where they’ll face Mythop Leisure FC at home

Last week’s visit to Fleetwood was purely from a neutral perspective but this week I have to declare an interest because when Blackpool FC are away or even when they’re at home and not worth paying the admission fee due to playing poorly then Blackpool Wren Rovers FC are our first choice for a football fix on a Saturday afternoon. They literally ‘football’ opponents to death but currently, they’re not scoring enough goals.

The legacy of ex manager Mark Senior was that he finally gave the younsters a chance and  ever since then they’ve never looked back.  I did have a concern at the beginning of last season when he left and took a couple of players with him but those concerns proved unfounded as new manager Dave Worthington ably supported by the same back room staff managed to retain many of the players, recruited wisely and were a whisker away from winning the title.  As with the season before they finished second and prior to that they finished in third so they’re not too far away.  Although unashamedly biased I have to say that they’ve thrown it way rather than coming second to better teams.  Too many poor results at home late season against inferior bottom half sides have cost them dear.

This season, they’ve gain started strongly with many of the team still nowhere near 25. Opponents Stoneclough were down in eleventh after a mixed start that’s seen them pick up two wins and two draws from their first seven games.  Last season they were one of only a handful of sides that denied Wrens a win as both matches ended in draws.  Stoneclough is near Kearsley just outside Bolton.  We went there for the last game of last season in May and like many of the venues in this league it’s a well maintained ground offering a friendly welcome all within an hour of the tower.

Well, in the first half Wren’s failed to live up to my build up. 1-0 and that’s how it stayed until the break.

It’s still early season and I still consider them good favourites for this Division.  Manager Worthington has lots of very good players on the books and with Tobin and Corless C to come back from injury he’ll have a good number of options to consider – I’m sure he and his management team will pick the right combinations.  A hard earned three points in a game that last season they may have drawn.  Onwards and upwards.

Mortgage Shop Sunday Alliance Report – 6th September 2009

TALK TO FRANK on 01253 304602, 07890 672397, or email on
frankkennedy256@btinternet.com.

Due to waterlogged pitches in Wyre only 25 of the 32 of the second round ties were played last Sunday in the Mortgage Shop Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Football Alliance Gledhill Cup. In some exciting games replays are required in 3 games which finished 4-4 after extra time with 5 matches ending in 4-3 scores.

Holders Quilligans had an early shock against Boars Head who scored first through Colin Hannigan but eased through 6-1 with Peter Tabener scoring three times in the first half. Quilligans now meet King Edward V11 from division 3B who had a surprise 4-3 win against No. 4 Celtic with goals from Ryan Breheny Mark Atkinson and 2 from Ben Sly.

Shock win of the day was by division 1 bottom side G. E. Rushworth who came out on top 3-2 at premier side Pulcinella`s with Wayne Dugdale Richard Mills and Daniel Davies scoring their goals. Premier side Hydronics led 2-0 at half time against division 1 opponents North West Kitchens who fought back to 3-3 to take the game to extra time. The teams finished level at 4-4 and replay next week.

In the all division 2B tie Highfield Social were lackadaisical against Metrostars who they had beaten 8-1 last week. They had to come from behind to level 2-2 but went on to win 8-3 in extra time during which substitute Craig Worrall scored all 6 goals with earlier goals coming from John Lawson and James Robinson.

Score Football from division 3B earned a replay against Northern Care Res. in a 4-4 final score with Paul Simpson scoring a hat trick for Northern Care and Adam Fletcher netting twice for the visitors. Frenchmans Cove continued their good form taking Claremont Cons. to a replay after a 4-4 draw. The Dunes Bloomfield Vets Northern Care and FC Talbot were all narrow 4-3 winners.

In the League inconsistent Old England recorded their second win of the season in division 2B by beating AFC Marton 5-0 with doubles from Jamie Fullalove and Graeme Foy. Gennars are still looking for their first points in division 3A after losing 8-1 to leaders AFC Ansdell Excelsior with Paul Smith scoring 4 goals and Scott Worsnip getting the consolation goal. In the only other game Berrys Beds and Teamsport drew 2-2 with Andy Smith scoring twice for Teamsport.
