Sportspy Reports – Sunday October 18th 2009

Sportspy Reports - Sunday October 18th 2009 At Moor Park, Bispham expecting to be watching Claremont Cons FC play Rossall Tavern FC in a league fixture.  However, due to a communication breakdown that fixture was off so instead it was across to Pitch 6 to watch new BFSFA sides Uncle Toms Cabin FC and FC Edge play each other in Division 3B.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday October 18th 2009

Both of these sides are new to Sunday football this season.  Poulton/Thornton based FC Edge are sponsored by the Edge nightspot.  The lads were playing at ‘Playfootball’ last season but fancied a crack at the ‘Men’s’ game this season.  After taking some time to acclimatise they’ve picked up some form having taken nine points from the last twelve.  They were seventh in the table this morning.  A first round bye in the Gledhill was followed by a second round exit to Division 1 outfit FC Loco.

This is the latest incarnation of Uncle Tom’s Cabin FC who have had a good number of sides in Sunday football over the last forty years.  The seafront hostelry appears to have a good set up with a big squad and well attired back room staff who are clearly well up for Sunday football despite the early season difficulties.  The team was in eleventh this morning having had two wins a draw in their first nine matches.  They too had a first Round bye in the Gledhill before upsetting Marshall Court Sandpiper in Round.  Highbuty Vets FC knocked them out 7-1 in Round 3.  Prior to today’s game they’d lost three league games in a row and were looking to get back on track.

At 7am it was yet another glorious Autumnal October morning across the Fylde Coast but by kick off time it was overcast, cold with rain in the air.  A difficult day for decent photo’s due due to he darkness.  Winter is on its way. The man in charge today was Mark bates and at 10:57am we were underway with Tom’s in the yellow strip kicking off.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday October 18th 2009

With only minutes left on the clock Uncle Tom’s hard work in the second half finally produced an equaliser.  A fantastic throughball from Jack Oldroyd found Stuart Martin just onside (A good decision by an honest linesman).  Martin raced away and bravely won the battle with the onrushing Edge keeper Jamie Owen to flick it past him and into the net – A good finish.  1-1

Full time score: Uncle Tom’s Cabin FC 1 -1 FC Edge

Sportspy Reports - Sunday October 18th 2009

In summary, and unusually for Division 3B this was a game devoid of clear cut chances.  Each side huffed and puffed in the opposition half but both goal keepers were largely unemployed for most of the match.  FC Edge started very well whilst Tom’s were pretty poor for the opening twenty minutes.  This was the time for FC Edge to put the game beyond doubt and despite scoring a deserved opener they failed to capitalise and as the game went on their opponents gradually crawled their way back into the game.  One goal is rarely enough and despite having a very good shout for a second half penalty the cutting edge in the Tom’s box was lacking.  A great performance from FC Edge’s Anthony Boardman who’s creative flair made him my Man of the Match.

On this performance Uncle Tom’s are lacking a ‘Boardman like’ midfielder who can feed the strikers. They lack the link up play from back to front.  However, they showed some good spirit today and few would begrudge them an equaliser based on second half possession.  Unsurprisingly, for their first season both of these teams may struggle to finish in the top four but FC Edge are still in a decent run of form and could challenge late season.

There were a few unnecessary and meatly challenges in this fixture and we were fortunate to still have 22 players on at the end.  Well officaited by Referee Bates who tried to keep his cards in his pockets but two yellows were flourished and quite rightly so.

Westway, Chorley was this morning's venue.  Home side Chillis FC are the top team in the Chorley Nissan Sunday Football league and after starting the season with eight straight wins BFSFA side Northern Care FC faced a real test this morning.  Last season they finished runners up and won the two domestic Cup competitions.  This years Cup is sponsored by the Oystons with the final being played at Bloomfield Road (Fact of the day).  Northern Care FC were also full of condidence at start of play.  Four straight league wins including victories against last seasons top two had put them top of the league.  Wins against the Squirrel and the Stable Bar had propelled them into the fourth round of the Gledhill Cup and they've already had a good run in the Lancashire Sunday trophy.

Overcast, damp and breezy over in Chorley this morning.  Northern Care were wearing their orange and black kit and at 11am today's referee got proceedings underway.  No team pictures today as I got lost arriving two minutes into the game.  Thanks to the locals for the directions!

Final score :  Northern Care FC won 5-4 on penalties

Sportspy Reports - Sunday October 11th 2009.

In summary Northern Care FC made hard work of this and if they hadn't gone through it would have been down to their own inadequacies rather than being beaten by the better team on the day.  Don't get me wrong, Chillis FC are testing opposition and it's clear why they have so much success in their own league.  However, they didn't do enough to win today and can have no arguments about the end result.  However, it's all about putting the ball in the net and despite all of that possession Northern failed to do so and Chillis almost snatched a victory in extra time.  Good performances from 16 (Ex Charnock player), 12 and the keeper who did deserve more for his efforts.

Not the best of performances from Northern.  They build up momentum well moving up the field at pace but they all too often fizzled out around the box due to greed, choosing the wrong pass but most of all bringing that momentum to a halt by slowing it down.  The best chance late on was due to getting the ball into the box early.  Good performances from Carroll, N Corless and Moore.  They also have some good talented youngsters who will only come up with more end product with experience.  Good luck to Northern Care FC in the next round where it will get really tough.  A top refereeing performance by the official.

Mortgage Shop Sunday Alliance Report 6 October 2009

The third round of the Gledhill Cup was played last Sunday in the Mortgage Shop Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Alliance. The only shock result was division 3B Frenchmans Cove 8-1 win against division 1 side G E Rushworth with Steven Clifford and Steven Gilmore both scoring twice. Bloomfield Vets eliminated Premier side Wrea Green thanks to goals from Benjamin McKay and Wesley Warrender. Spindles from division 2A fought back from 3-0 down against division 1 FC Loco only to eventually lose 4-3 with a Matthew Parr hat trick seeing Loco through.

Golden Eagle from division 3B were narrow 2-1 losers to Premier side Fylde Coast Gates. Stable Bar also from 3B gave Premier leaders Northern Care a tough game before losing 3-0 with 2 goals from Paul Eddleston. Lee Catlow`s 4 goals helped Poulton SFC to a 7-1 victory over Hampton Road Social.

In the Premier Division Hydronics good run ended when they were beaten 6-2 by Pulcinella`s with Stuart Parkinson and Kyle Bedford scoring twice for the winners. Old Town Hall had a good 7-3 win over Paris Casino in division 1 with 4 goals from Graeme Hutchinson.

Division 2A leaders Great Eccleston won 5-2 against Claremont Cons but are under pressure from West Coast Tackle who went second after thrashing Autoweld 9-0 with Rick Seear and John Emery both getting doubles.

Bottom side in division 2B Mere Park earned their first points in the 2-1 defeat of AFC Marton with goals from captain David McNicol and Aaron Hodgkinson. Blackpool Catholic Club got back to winning ways after 4 losses in the 5-0 win at Marshall Court Sandpiper with Phil Brown getting a hat trick and Kyle Weaver and Stephen Bosner also netting. Inconsistent Old England lost 8-2 to Skye with Lee O`Neill grabbing 4 goals.

Real Burlington went top of division 3A after leaders AFC Ansdell Excelsior were surprisingly beaten 2-0 by Teamsport 90 who went third.

All 4 games in division 3B had players scoring 3 goals including Adam Bradley for King Edward V11 who reversed last weeks defeat by Newton Castilla by beating them 6-2. The other hat trick men were Sean Yates for Ashiana Stuart Ford for FC Edge and C & G Electrical`s Chris Davies. Next Sunday sees 11 Alliance teams competing in the third round of the Lancashire Cup.
