![]() | At Collins Park, Blackpool watching the Lancashire Sunday Trophy match between Quilligans FC who were up against last season's winners and Rochdale champions Copperpot FC in Round 4. Both sides were aiming for a place in the last sixteen in this notoriously tough competition. This was one of only two games across the Fylde Coast to survive the week's wet weather. |

It's a rare occasion that Quilligans FC are the underdogs in any fixture but many would say that this morning was one of those occasions. Rochdale side Copperpot FC have dominated the Rochdale Sunday league for nine seasons. The 2008/09 campaign was a season to remember for Copperpot and their departing management team of Barry & Anthony Luker. A play-off victory over arch rivals Littleborough saw them retain the Premier League title for the 8th time in the last nine years whilst the same opponents were beaten 4-2 in extra time as Copperpot won the Lancashire FA Sunday Trophy at Leyland. In addition to this they retained The Chris Shyne Trophy for the 4th year in a row with a 6-0 victory over Midland Pheonix. At the end of October Sam Butterworth's team are currently top of the Rochdale Premier league after having won five and lost one of their opening six fixtures.
Of course, Quilligans FC are no strangers to success either. Mark Spedding's team have won the BFSFA title six times in the last nine seasons whilst finishing runners up in the other three. Their ongoing run in the Gledhill Cup is second to none in its 40 odd year history after having won it five years in succession. Early round wins against Boars Head FC and King Edward VII FC has meant that they're still going strong in this season's competition and next week they travel away to Division 1 side Fairhaven FC hoping for a place in the quarter-finals. The Premier Division league table sees them in third place after having won three, drawn one and lost one of their opening five matches. Although there are only ten sides in the top Division this season five sides have had decent but indifferent starts with all of the contenders having dropped points in recent weeks. When they all purely concentrate on football related matters it remains an interesting Division for the neutral.
Many referees leave their phone off the hook when this type of fixture comes up for allocation but today's referee Barry Cropp relishes such occasions. Known as a referee who officiates without fear or favour exactly in the same way as he'd officiate in a match at a far higher level both sets of players should have been well used to his style by now. Last week this game was postponed due to the constant heavy rain that persisted right up until kick off. Along with the rest of Commonedge, the pitches at Blackpool Road, St Annes, Seafield Road, Rossall and Boundary can withstand any rain just so long as there's a decent break in the rain. More overnight rain resulted in a 9am pitch inspection. In truth, after a quick walk up and down the pitch it was well playable and it didn't take long for Mr Cropp to give the nod. Due to the vast majority of matches being postponed the crowd was boosted by players and officials from other clubs either cheering Quills on to possible victory or jeering them on to a hopeful defeat. Either way it made for a good atmosphere for what looked to be an intriging fixture between two talented sides. At 11:06 am the tie was underway in bright sunshine with Quilligans FC in the blue kicking towards the clubhouse.
Fyldesport.com and the Rochdale Sunday football league have forged a number of close links over the last couple of season's and it's good to see that their league now has a website as good as any (except ours that will pass the 8 million page view landmark today). Click here to access the excellent Rochdale site. There's also a good report and some great photo's on the Quilligan's site and you can access it by clicking here.

Quilligans FC kick off

Quilligans FC had a strong bench today. It had to be with that lot on it.

A good diving save by the Copperpot keeper.

After a relatively even start Quilligans took the lead. Danny Rowe (Pictured) charged down an attempted clearance 35 yards out and took the ball on at pace.

He cut across the box, beat a defender and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. Great finish. 1-0

Peter Taberner (Right)

Referee Mr Cropp

Midway through the half Copperpot FC fell apart at the back. On 23 minutes Lee Broadbent swung in a cross from the right and Steve Palmer was left completely unmarked to send a looping header into the top corner that the keeper could only stand and admire. 2-0.

More pressure but this time a good save from Rowe's effort.

On 26 minutes this video shows Quilligans FC going into a 3-0 lead. Nick Greenall's corner is initially headed on by Lee Broadbent and at the far post Kevan Ford is first to react as he scrambles the ball over the line. 3-0

Two minutes later and the home fans are in dreamland as Danny Rowe's expertly delivered free kick was met by the head of Phil Thompson (Pictured) who made it 4-0 with only 28 minutes gone.

The second half is underway

Lee Broadbent enjoying being back out in the open air.

At half time there was shouting in the Copperpot FC dressing room and laughter emanating from the home dressing room. Copperpot came out strong in the second half clearly disappointed with their first half showing. Quills' attacking flair had been diminished and after a good spell of pressure the visitors pulled a goal back through Davey Luker on 58 minutes as shown above. 4-1

Barry Luker now running the line for Copperpot FC

Danny Rowe (Left)

On 63 minutes it was 4-2 and 'game on' as Lance Ogunyode (9) cleaned up a goalmouth scramble. Collins Park is certainly a lucky ground for Lance (Goalscoring wise) as that's at least three in three visits and not many can boast that statistic. 4-2

As you can see he's also got an excellent leap but couldn't grow tall enough to trouble Speight on this occasion.

A close call for Copperpot as the bouncing ball looked goal bound before being hacked off the line.

With the home side a little nervous and with Copperpot on the front foot Quilligans FC ended the contest on 80 minutes. More good chasing down from Rowe forced the keeper into a poor clearance but Broadbent showed great skill in hitting a first time effort back over the keeper's head from 40 yards. 5-2.

Quilligans FC substitute Micky Evans unlucky to be on the bench after a couple of recent hat-tricks

Robbie Boal

With time running out Quills were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. The usually accurate Danny Rowe got the power right but instead of hitting the back of the net his effort only found the back garden of Harry Feeney across the road.

A good touch from Luker senior

Game over and Quilligans FC are through to Round 5

Final score : Quilligans FC 5 – 2 Copperpot FC

In summary this match was over after 30 minutes as Quilligans FC raced into a 4-0 lead. The visitors were left shell shocked as a mixture of poor marking and quality finishing left them with a mountain to climb. Before the game Copperpot were grumbling about being without a couple of key players but as I've said on countless previous occasions if you don't get your best side to travel in this difficult competition you won't get too far and so it proved this morning as the holders relinquished their grip on the famous trophy. To give them credit Copperpot gave it everything they had after the break and deservedly brought it back to 4-2 but conceding the fifth on 80 minutes was the defining moment. A disappointing day for Copperpot but the usual good performance by Lance who ran his socks off.
A great first half performance from Quilligans FC saw them race into an unassailable 4-0 lead. They had a very strong side out today with a very strong bench in support. Rowe and Broadbent were a real handful in the first half and with Palmer in midfield they looked very solid defensively. All four were well taken goals. Losing Chris Morris with what looked to be a bad injury at half time combined with an element of complacency appeared to throw them off their game for the first twenty minutes of the second half and at 4-2 they were on the ropes a little until Broadbent's excellent skill and vision saw them through. They have the players and the ability to go all the way. A lot of good sides have fallen by the wayside but there's no mugs still left in. Good luck to them in Round 5. Another good refereeing performance by Barry Cropp.

![]() | Moments ago referee Mr Cropp passed the Collins Park pitch fit for play after a 9am inspection. Quilligans FC will take on current holders Copperpot FC from Rochdale in the Lancashire Sunday Trophy (11am kick off). No butty van though I'm afraid so be sure to make alternative arrangements if you're coming down to watch what should be an entertaining game. The match between Skye and Fleetwood Kings is also on. FC Loco have set off in hope to Blackburn and no news on the Spindles match. |
![]() | Friday (17:00) – You'll have seen from the Shoutbox that the incessant rain has already had a negative impact on Sunday's football programme. All Blackpool and Wyre Council pitches including Commonedge are already off. Grounds such as Boundary Park, Moor Park, Stanley Park, Anchorsholme, Broadwater, Cottam Hall, Thornton Sports Centre and Fleetwood Road, Thornton are also included. Fylde pitches will be inspected on Saturday so stay tuned for regular updates. Beacon Hill is also off and we await news from Blackpool Wren Rovers. By Saturday we expect the fixtures article below to contain only details of games on. It will not be a long list. And don't even think about organising friendlies on pitches that have been called off – get on the beach. |

Mortgage Shop Sunday Alliance Report 25th October 2009
Games in the Mortgage Shop Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Alliance were again affected by heavy rain and strong winds but on Sunday the weather was the winner with all the Lancashire Cup matches being postponed and only 12 League games surviving. In the Premier Division Poulton SFC went top after defeating Fylde Coast Gates 10-4 in the only game played with Lee Catlow scoring 4 and Carl Eastwood getting a hat trick.
FC Matrix moved to joint top of Division 1 after winning an exciting game with North West Kitchens who had led 1-0 at half time through a deflected 25 yard free kick from Tony Whittle. Tim Kinley increased Kitchens lead early in the second half before 2 goals from Marco Cobb including a penalty and a Phillip Ioannou strike gave Matrix the points in the 3-2 victory. In the meeting of the bottom two sides Paris Casino and G E Rushworth were level 1-1 at the interval but then Rushworth went nap to win 4-1.

![]() | Terrible conditions overnight and early morning resulted in a late postponement of today's featured Lancashire Sunday Trophy tie between Quilligan's FC and Copperpot FC. This meant a late dash to Boundary Park to call in on two of only twelve games that survived the weather. |

On Pitch 3 we had the two bottom sides in Division 1 as Paris Casino FC (Blue) were at home to GE Rushworth FC (Previously known as the Golden Eagle). Both managers were complaining of four or five weak and feeble players who refused to answer their phones and instead stayed in bed. No moral fibre these players of today. Something that would never have happened in my day. Poor pictures but they did improve as the light got better. It was 1-1 at the break and with the wind initially behind them at the start of the second half GE Rushworth FC looked favourites to take the points but in the end Paris Casino FC romped to a 4-1 victory.

We start with the opening goal for Paris Casino FC. Rushworth keeper Morrell initially pulls off a decent save from a free kick but from the resultant Chris Jackson corner kick he's beaten by the swirling wind as the ball goes over everyone's head and into the far corner. 1-0

Ben Oldendorp (Left)

Paris Casino FC manager Archie Harrison retrieves the ball from the flats. He never quite recovered.

Blur

The first game back for Jason Nuttall after his long absence but he's still managed to maintain his good looks.

Offside – just there.

The whistle's already gone for offside so there's no way Morrell's wasting any energy diving for it. He surely has the biggest gloves in Sunday football.

Daniel Davies. I've given it a lot of thought but apart from a fashion statement or a good luck charm I have absolutely no idea what purpose the red headband serves.

Struggling with the brolly

GE Rushworth FC equalise just before the break. 1-1

Only 'Hardcore WAGS' out watching Sunday football this morning. This Paris Casino FC fan overjoyed at having her picture taken.

Kinky wellies for all you fellow foot fetishists out there

Next door on Pitch 4 we had North West Kitchens FC hosting FC Matrix. The kind of game you hide behind the sofa to watch. In the end this was a cracking Division 1 fixture that attracted a fair sized crowd of people who were left without a game. In the first half underdog's Kitchen's took the lead against the wind following a deflected free kick from 25 yards. We join the match as the half time break approaches.

The Kitchens are in the blue

FC Matrix had lots of excellent possession and created a whole host of chances but resolute defending and misplaced finishing meant that they couldn't find the net. In this picture Marco Cobb draws the keeper but as ex discipline secretary Dave Hall watches on his shot went inches wide of the post. 1-0 to the Kitchens at the break.

James Taylor was the unenvied referee who was allocated this tasty appointment. Brothers Wayne (right) and Steve are on hand to offer some moral support (Not that any were needed)

Farmers Arms' manager Dave Hall (Left) and referee Dale Harvey both left without games this morning are still out and about for a fix of Sunday football in the driving rain.

North West Kitchens FC supporters up in the Argosy Stand.

Not long into the second half and FC matrix go very close from a free kick.

The second half wasn't very old when we had controversy. FC Matrix keeper Adam Pennington jumps for a high ball whilst Tim Kinley just stood his ground. The ball was spilled and Killer Kinley gratefully gobbled up the opportunity to put the Kitchens 2-0 up. The crowd went wild………………..

KInley finds the net.

..and so did Pennington who thought that he'd been wronged. As Kinley receives congratulation Pennington's off for a chat with referee Taylor complaining about being impeded.

Pennington has his say – James Taylor shows the yellow card so he couldn't have said anything nice.

'Get back in yer goals you bloody idiot'

The sun is out and with it is is Tim's torso

The game's turning point as a needless foul in the box as the Matrix forward was going away from goal led to a penalty. Marco Cobb (Far left) converted. 1-2

Adam Pennington (Matrix keeper)

Russell Perrett – he'll be bald as a coot by age 40

Tim Kinley (Left) and Tony Pearson get a good grip of each other's shirts.

Referee James Taylor handled the game very well in my opinion

As soon as the rain stopped players were complaining about the sun in their eyes

FC Matrix manager Paul Cobb

Fixtures' secretary Carole Cox far from happy as she faced a frantic afternoon of fixture re-arranging due to this morning's postponements.

Jordan Cobb

Pearson in the thick of it once again

If ever a bolt of lightning was required it was right now as all of Fyldesport.com's trouble makers were gathered in one place on wet grass. FC Matrix, the Kitchens, Quills and Skye (An unholy alliance), Devvy Arms, FC Eden and the ex keeper of Ward Heating FC. All we were short of were a couple of Blackpool Rangers officials.

Jason Mcuish. Note the Mere Park FC substitute who has to take the prize for the worst ever Sunday football gear in the league's long history.

Jon Simmons

Preparing for the throw. A large and rare puddle at Boundary Park. Surely a magnet for some crazy fool.

Anthony Pearson

A quick prayer.

Martin Cardwell is replaced

Moments later and FC Matrix equalise. Paul Cobb celebrates behind the goal. 2-2

With both the ascendency and the strong wind behind them (After completely changing around) FC Matrix scored a decisive third. An unselfish cross from the right found in-form Marco Cobb who slotted it under the advancing keeper. 3-2

Marco Cobb (Top right) celebrates what turned out to be the winner by giving some back to the army of detractors on the line. FC Matrix keeper Adam Pennington (Puddled) decides to go for a lunchtime swim in the Boundary Park puddle.

A late scare for FC Matrix as the Kitchens go close. Well gathered by Peno.

and well gathered by Rimmo at the other end

Handshakes all round. Well reffed by James Taylor. A great game of hard-fought Sunday football in testing conditions. Well worth the effort for everyone who turned out this morning. Shame on those that bottled it and stayed in bed.
