Compere Cup latest.

Compere Cup latest. An update on the Summer Cup competition.

Compere Cup latest.

Steamy weather, hot tempers, sore feet, long grass, dusty pitches with no lines, contentious decisions, no referees, players playing for more than one side, pre-season knocks, no changing facilities – how we love the Compere Cup.

There'd be an eight week compulsory break from kicking a ball competitively if I had my way.  You used to come back for pre-season training in late July full of hunger, enthusiasm and pre-season anticipation remembering everything that was good about Sunday football having forgot all the not so good aspects of it.

However, I'm old and miserable and there's plenty who don't agree so here's an update on the Compere Cup.

Firstly, (and don't shoot the messenger), the council are apparently hopping mad at teams playing Compere games and Friendlies on Commonedge.  Not only are they unhappy about the pitches being unable to recover but teams are trying to get away without paying.  You have been warned.  If they catch you then you'll get billed. Why on earth they decided to leave the posts up is another matter. It's almost like sticking a mirror up in the Prebonds changing room and expecting a Quilligans player not to check their hair in it.

Quarter Final line up

Match A – Winner of Group 8 (Not yet decided) v Skye (Group 5)

Match B – CLS Hydronics (Group 4) v Quilligans (Group 1)

Match C – Layton Institute (Group 6) v Arcadian (Group 2)

Match D – Cahoots (Group 3) v Winner of Group 7 (Not yet decided)

Well done to Skye who came though a difficult group that included Red Rose Catering.  Blackpool Rangers were unlucky not to progress in Group 2.  In the Group of Sleep (Group 7) there's only been one match thus far played and that was when Argosy beat Great Eccleston.  Time to get a move on.  Some of the other groups still have games to be played even though the Group winners have already been decided.

Semi Finals

Winner of game B v Winner of game D

Winner of game C v Winner of game A

BRANNIGANS FC START PRE-SEASON TRAINING

BRANNIGANS FC START PRE-SEASON TRAININGBrannigans FC start their pre-season training this thursday 6th July at their new home, the Co-op Club on Preston New Road – at 7pm. New players always welcome.

Run by Fire Service fitness instructor and First Team Player/Manager Daz Meehan, the training is sure to mix hard physical work along with football and is rumoured to involve the infamous 'Bleep Test'.

Basically the Bleep test involves shuttle running at an ever-increasing pace between ever-decreasing time bleeps until you drop or throw up or both. The higher the level you get to, the fitter you are.

Sessions will run every tuesday and thursday evening until the start of the season, with stats being recorded so that players can see their progress.

The changing rooms, showers and bar will be open.

Sessions are free, although anyone beaten by the 40-year-old beer-swilling Brannigans Chairman in the Bleep Test will have to buy him a pint as well as giving serious consideration to hanging up their boots.

New players and even non-players just wanting to keep fit are more than welcome to attend.

Brannigans FC First team particularly need a quality goalkeeper for next season.

BRANNIGANS FC START PRE-SEASON TRAINING

The photogenic Meehan (pictured above) promises some good sessions over the next month or so with the emphasis being on improving each participant's fitness levels on a week by week basis.

“Of course everyone can go at their own pace” says Daz, “but the idea is to get players fitter – sunday football like any competitive sport is far safer and much more enjoyable when you are properly physically prepared for it. This isn't going to be easy for some, they'll hate me now but love me by the time the season starts.”

Sounds like his overweight and underperforming First Team squad are in for a bit of a wake-up call!

In the Compere Cup the Burlington took on the Talbot Sports & Social Club.  It was a really good game with lots of end to end football.  The Burlington were always behind but in the end the Talbot had to endure a nervy final few minutes as their opponents pulled it back to 4-3.  Quilligans win the group as expected.

Out on Pitch 7 last season's Reform Health Club were playing their first ever fixture as Arcadian FC in a friendly against the Subway FC who are due to change their name to Gillespies in the very near future.  Another close fixture that ended 2-1 to Arcadian.

It's no secret that many managers are none too keen on the Compere Cup.  You can add AFC Dunes manager Danny Hugo to the list when he sees his player Andy Emery being carried off after a nasty injury following his guest appearance for the Subway this evening.

New Alliance side Waterloo FC were playing their first competitive game in a friendly against the Royal Oxford.  It was 1-0 at half time to the Waterloo but when I left the Royal had just equalised.

There's no such thing as a friendly as a few choice tackles spark a bit of handbags.

Over the dyke we had an interesting Compere Cup fixture between the Brannigans first team and a 'new look' Highfield Social.  After Highfield took the lead Brannigans came back to go in 2-1 ahead at the interval.  In the end Brannigans won the game 3-2.
