Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 3rd 2006.Round 2 of the Gledhill Cup and at Blackpool Road, St Annes it was a big day for the Dunes Hotel Pub on Lytham Road as the Dunes FC of Division 1 took on AFC Dunes of Division 2B in a much anticipated tie.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 3rd 2006.

When this tie was drawn out at the league secretaries' meeting there was something of a cheer and ever since then the whole Pub has been looking forward to September 3rd.

The Dunes FC, being a Division 1 side, automatically received a first round bye.  They've got off to a great start this season and this morning they were lying third in the league behind leaders Hydronics FC and second placed Bloomfield Vets FC.  Wins against CTK FC and St Annes Ex Service FC along with a 2-2 draw against the Philharmonic FC have given them seven points from the first four games.  Their only defeat came against the New Castle FC.

Last season the Dunes FC finished in eighth place in Division 1 and were rather disappointing but this was mainly due to player shortages.  In last season's Gledhill Cup they fell at the Round 2 stage to Red Rose Catering FC in a 6-3 defeat.

Last season AFC Dunes
had a memorable season in 3A.  A fifth place finish was good enough to secure promotion to Division 2B.  They also reached the final of the Division 3 Cup where they were beaten in an entertaining final by double winners, Gardeners Arms FC.  They've had a mixed start in the higher Division with two wins and two defeats.  This morning they were in eighth place.  The two wins came aginst the Central Club FC and Partner Marketing FC with the losses coming against the Stanley Arms, Wesham FC and Fylde Coast Gates FC.

To reach Round 3 and set up this mouth watering fixture they had to get past the Windmill FC (3B) with a 3-1 win.  Last season AFC Dunes fell in Round 3 to Premier Division side the Clarence FC following a 5-1 defeat.

Yesterday's terrible weather continued with squally showers, the strong wind coming straight off the sea. Today's referee was Martin Rogers.  AFC won the toss and elected to take advantage of the wind.  At 11:03 am the Dunes kicked off towards the sea wearing the white and blue strip.

With the wind on their backs AFC had the better of the opening forays and on fifteen minutes they deservedly took the lead with a brilliant goal.  Matt Hindle's trickery resulted in a cheeky back pass for Jay Munday to run on to.  He took it inside on to his right foot, looked up then bent an unstoppable curling strike past Curtis into the top corner.  0 – 1.

Two minutes later and the Dunes equalised.  A Matt Raybould clearance found touch on the left touchline.  A quick Andy Wade throw in found the feet of Mark Taylor.  He was allowed to turn before firing a powerful low drive across keeper Kibbler and into the far corner.  1 – 1.

On 67 minutes AFC went close after yet another Mark Prescott header from a corner just flew wide of the post.  Beginning to push forward in search of an equaliser AFC were almost caught out less than a minute later when Cook had his second goal of the game disallowed for a controversial offside.

Final score :  The Dunes FC 3 – 1 AFC Dunes.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 3rd 2006.

It wasn't the best of cup ties as the conditions spoiled it for most of the game.  Saying that, both sides were guilty of overplaying passes and overshooting corners when they had the advantage of the wind.

Ho
wever, there were some cracking goals, especially from Munday and McKay. If AFC had converted the penalty who knows what might have happened – possibly extra time.  But they didn't and in the end the Dunes edged it to go through to Round 3.  Good luck to them in the next Round.

Sportspy Reports - August 27th 2006.

To be honest, whilst I was away, I was hoping for a Round 1 replay as I like to see at least one game from every round.  Not only for personal interest but so I can get pictures for the 40th Gledhill Final programme.

In Round 1 on August 20th there was only one drawn game which saw Elswick and the Shovels draw 2 – 2.

Today's replay saw the Shovels take Elswick back to Commonedge Road.  The Shovels were sixth in 2B this morning after winning two and losing one of their first three matches.  Good victories over the Central Club and Partner Marketing were spoiled in midweek by an 8-2 thrashing by Brannigans Reserves.  The Shovels interest in this famous competition ended last season in Round 2 when they were beaten 8-3 away at Premier Division Highbury.  After gaining promotion in the 2004/05 season they went on to finish in a creditable fourth place in 2B in 2005/06.

Visitors Elswick have only played one league game so far and that resulted in a 4-2 defeat to one of the 2A title favourites Blackpool Rangers.  Last season they reached Round 3 before being beaten by Talbot Sports & Social Club following a replay.  After finishing third and gaining promotion from 3A last season a little more water has to flow under the bridge before we can gauge how they'll do in the higher Division.

Today's referee was big Andy Byrne and under generally clear skies the Shovels kicked off in the yellow strip kicking towards the sea out on Pitch 3 against the strong breeze.  The pitches a lot greener than the last time I saw them.

The game came alive on eighteen minutes with a goal apiece for either side which were almost identical in nature.  Firstly, Elswick were handed a free kick on the right wing,  Sean Louth delivered the ball to the far post for Matt Smith to finish neatly past Micky Hall.  Two minutes later and it was Elswick's turn to concede a free kick in a similar position.  Scott Christy hit the ball firmly to the far post and the loose ball was pounced on by player manager Neil Ashford to turn and sweep the ball past the leaping Salmon.  1-1.

There was little else to report in the second half as resolute Elswick defending both aerially and on the ground reduced the Shovels to long range efforts.  Elswick were no threat up front but defensively were excellent in the second half.

Final score : Shovels FC 1 – 3 Elswick FC

Sportspy Reports - August 27th 2006.

So it will be Elswick FC who'll travel to Boundary Park next week to face Division 1 side the Philharmonic at Boundary Park in which will undoubtedly be a very tough game for them.  The difference between the sides in this game was the way Elswick defended the wind and to be honest the Shovels didn't create one decent chance in the second half.

Good luck to Elswick FC in Round 2.

Secure Heath FC (Division 3B)

Secure Heath FC (Division 3B)Back home and catching up with electronic correspondence.  I've recieved another club profile this time from Secure Health FC of Division 3B who are certainly not short of sponsors.

Secure Heath FC (Division 3B)

Club Website – http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/securehealthfc/

Just a quick note to give you some info about our club……

Formed for the season 2006/07 we were originally named “The Falcon F.C.” but due to our main sponsor changing we were then re-named “Secure Health F.C.”

The managers of the team are Paul Haslam and Andy Edwards, Paul is also the secretary and Andy is the treasurer which could be a mistake because he's not very bright.  We are very happy with the bunch of lads that we've got, especially since we only decided to start the team a few weeks before the season kicked off, and of course at that point we didn't have a sponsor!

Our base is still The Falcon Pub, Hardhorn Way, Poulton and our home ground is Cottam Hall Playing Fields, Poulton.  The Falcon is one of our sponsors and with it being located so near to Cottam Hall, all away teams are invited back to the pub where Sean (landlord) has hot food ready after each game.  Sean has kindly sponsored the team for necessary equipment like first aid kit, balls, bibs and training cones etc and he is raising money for the team whenever he can.  Sean played in the Sunday Alliance until he was '86 years old' and is well known by Peter Collins and the board.  He is down watching every week and has even asked to be signed on although I did advise him that Zimmer Frames might not be allowed on the field of play!

The sponsor from which we take our name is
Secure Health Private Medical Insurance.  This is provided by our Chairman, Mr. Julian Bennett (Joolz), who also plays for the team at either right back or right mid (unless we're short, and then he'll play where he's told).  Julian has kindly sponsored the team for the home kit and league fees.  The home kit is the Huddersfield Town home kit which consists of blue & White striped shirts, white shorts and white socks.

Secure health are a National company which is owned by Axa insurance, they provide private medical insurance at very competitive rates and can usually save people up to 30% off their current premium.  Obviously medical insurance is very relevant for any clubs/players and therefore Julian will be happy to advise any clubs/players from the Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Alliance and potentially save them some money as well as giving them peace of mind.

Our third sponsor is
Pulcinella's Italian Restaurant , Bispham Road, Cleveleys.  The owners, Roberto and Alessandro are very keen football fans and are kindly sponsoring our away kit.  This is the Italy kit and is exactly the same as the one worn by the Italian team in this years world cup, which they won of course!  This kit will consist of blue shirts, blue shorts and blue socks.

Pulcinella's is one of the Fylde Coast
