Mortgage Shop Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Alliance Report  – 19 September 2010

Heavy overnight rain decimated the first round of the Lancashire Sunday Trophy with only seven of the scheduled seventeen ties involving Mortgage Shop Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Alliance teams being played. Results were disappointing with only two local sides going through to the next round. Poulton SFC defeated Preston team Ashton Villa 7-2 with a hat trick from Lee Catlow and a pair from Daniel Morris. Fylde Coast Gates beat FC Dale from Rochdale 5-2 with Samuel Dyer scoring twice. Although a Kyle Bingham header gave FC Eden an early lead against Canaries from Preston goals either side of the break resulted in a 2-1 defeat. The County lost on penalties to Rochdalians after finishing level 3-3.

In division 1 Fleetwood Gym had a shock win over leaders Bloomfield Vets. who dropped their first points in the 2-1 defeat with Dean Richards and Daniel Smith scoring and Andy Gouck replying.

Bloomfield Hotel surprised division 2 leaders No. 4 Rangers who suffered their first loss in the 3-2 result. Fleetwood Kings beat second placed Real Burlington 8-2 with Zack Coultas Lee Crook and Paul Myerscough all netting twice. Matthew Derby scored four times for Layton Institute in the 5-1 victory over Dockers.

Boars Head top division 3 after ending Hansom Cab`s good run by defeating them 5-0 with a Craig Harding double. Blackpool Lane Ends continued their high scoring by winning 9-0 against Old England with a Gareth Jakins treble and pairs from Michael Treece-Birch and Craig Worrall. St Annes won their first game in the 6-3 success against bottom side Blue Room with Nick Beddows grabbing four. A Conner Cooper double helped Teamsport 90 to a 4-2 victory over No. 4 Celtic.

At the top of division 4 No. 1 Club got back to winning ways after thrashing bottom team Truncheon 12-0 with Danny Cowell scoring four and Gavin Holmes a hat trick. Stable Bar went joint second after trouncing Waterloo Pub 9-0 with Brett Nixon striking four and Shaun Worden three. Xceptional Kitchens are level with Stable Bar after winning 8-0 against Fylde Coast Vets. with Rick Singleton`s three goals leading their scorers. Tony Burke`s four goals helped Clifton Arms to an 8-2 success against Lane Ends Res. In a close game Waterloo  Hotspur came out on top 6-4 over Metrostars with pairs from Mark Bray and Brendan Smalley and Rob Harris replying twice.

Braving the inclement weather at Boundary Park, Blackpool this morning watching FC Eden take on top Preston Sunday football side Canaries FC in the opening Round of this season's Lancashire Sunday Trophy.  Both had enjoyed good starts to their respective Premier Division league campaigns but who would come out on top today?

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 19th 2010

Last season, BFSFA side FC Eden won the Division 1 title on goal difference from FC Loco to win promotion to the Premier Division.  This followed on from the Division 2A and Division 3A titles that they'd won during the 2007/08 and 2008/09 campaigns.  A successful run by anyone's standards and the well organised and well run club entered the Premier Division in good spirits and full of confidence.  Six games in and they find themselves in mid table.  It's a big step up from Division 1 to the Prem and despite giving a good account of themselves they failed to pick up a single point from games against the Devonshire Arms, Poulton and Blackpool Rangers but on the other side of the coin they've picked up maximum points from Pulcinellas, Northern Care and Newton Arms.  In addition, they've cruised through to Round 3 of the Gledhill Cup after a convincing win against Division 4 side Clifton Arms.  They faced a tougher task this morning against Preston raiders Canaries FC.

Canaries FC (Click here for their website) are a Preston side primarily made up of Asian players and they've been involved in the Preston Sunday league for many seasons.  They've been in the Premier Division for a number of seasons.  In 2007/08 they finished tenth, in 2008/09 they finished seventh and last season they improved to finish in fifth so they're on the up.  Being largely of the Muslim faith many of the players have recently endured a month long fast for Ramadan which came to an end on Friday September 10th.  The Preston league quite rightly gave them special dispensation to delay the start to their season and last Sunday, fortified by a good breakfast, they duly started their league campaign with a 6-0 thumping of early season strugglers, Penwortham Town FC.  Anyone out there taken in by the urban myth that 'Asians can't play football' is ignorantly mistaken.

On with the game.  Shocking weather this morning at Boundary Park with wind and driving heavy rain but give the Council credit, the pitches were in excellent condition without a puddle in site.  Today's referee was Mr Barry Cropp making a brief return to Sunday football.  Not the best of days for photographs.  Canaries FC, unsurprisingly in the yellow, kicked off at 11:25.

In the first half an hour home side FC Eden were dominating the game and on about twenty minutes they deservedly took the lead when Kyle Bingham rose the highest in the above picture to nod it home. 1-0.  Despite all of their offensive possession, Eden just couldn't get the all important second and as the half went on the visitors began to claw their way back into the game.

Final score :  FC Eden 1 – 2 Canaries FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 19th 2010

In summary this was an entertaining game despite the dreadful weather conditions mainly thanks to the high quality of the Boundary Park pitch which stayed firm all of the way through the game.  FC Eden played some great football for the opening thirty minutes and if they'd managed to add to their opener they may have gone on to win it but the visitors improved greatly as the first half progressed and were greatly encouraged by the equaliser just before the interval.

After they scored early in the second half Canaries FC started to dominate possession.  They play some very attractive passing football on the deck, pass and move from back to front and after they had gone ahead it was a tough ask for FC Eden to put a decent spell of possession together although they did go close on a couple of occasions.  Overall, the visitors more than deserved their victory and we wish them the best of luck in the next round.  Well officiated by Mr Cropp.

Committee note (2) - September 2010
It has been discovered that Premier Division side, the Devonshire Arms FC, inadvertently fielded an ineligible player during their Gledhill cup tie with Division 3's Lane Ends FC on the 5th September, a match they went on to win 5-0.  One of their players had picked up a ban for five yellow cards whilst playing for his Saturday team.  Both the Devvy and the player claim not to have been informed by his Saturday club and therefore had no concerns about playing him in nets for the Cup tie with Lane Ends FC.  The result has now be reversed with the Devonshire Arms FC being expelled from the competition.  The Lane Ends FC will now take their place in the next round v Fleetwood Gym FC in early October.

I always try to get over to Wesham to watch one of the Kirkham sides at least once a season.  Today, it was the turn of Lane Ends FC who were hosting AFC Wilo in a Division 3 league fixture.  The pitch at Wesham is notorious for being heavy in the winter due to its poor drainage.  Regular readers of this rubbish may remember last season's report on the Stable Bar FC v Score Football FC which took place on a bog of a pitch where the mud was six inches deep in some places.  Perhaps that was one of the reasons for my early season visit this morning although the last 48 hours had seen some particularly heavy showers.  Despite the rain, the pitch was in a decent condition and the venue always provides a semi rural backdrop for photographs.

One of the many downsides of the social media networking site 'Facebook' are the status updates of Lane Ends FC manager Dave Bamber.  His midweek graphic description of his unblocking of the changing room toilets of ten season's worth of Sunday footballers Sunday morning vile 'Beer and Kebab' bowel movements had me wretching over my salmon and cream cheese baguette.  No option but to get his arm in and remove the offending obstructions.  One of the many unseen and unappreciated duties of the Sunday football manager.

Both of these sides made their debuts in the BFSFA last season.  Lane Ends FC struggled badly throughout most of the campaign in Division 3A but improved enough late on to finish second bottom after racking up only three wins and three draws.  In contrast, opponents AFC Wilo, then playing as FC Edge enjoyed a fantastic season under manager Matt Duke.  They not only went on to finish sixth in the league but memorably went on to lift the Division 3 Cup after beating favourites Ashiana FC at AFC Blackpool.  This season, both clubs find themselves in Division 3.  After five games they have identical records with two wins, a draw and two defeats.  However, a superior goal difference meant that AFC Wilo were in sixth and Lane Ends FC were in ninth.  The BFSFA fixture computer (Grumpy) had matched today's opponents together only a fortnight ago when Wilo came out on top with a 3-0 win.  Both sides were looking for a win to keep in touch with the top five.  Both clubs were on the end of comprehensive defeats to Premier Division opposition last weekend in the Gledhill Cup.

Last night I stayed over in East Lancashire for a wedding.  Up early, and travelling back with a hangover there were heavy downpours all the way but by 11am the sun was trying to break through at Wesham.  No official referee this morning.  There were conflicting stories – he had either withdrawn his labour or the league had double booked him.  Whatever the reason, stand-in Alex Walker took up the whistle. On arrival at 10:45, the game was underway, both sides electing to kick off early without an official ref hence the lack of team pictures.  Lane Ends FC were in the yellow.

The game started off fairly evenly but Lane Ends FC went closest to taking the lead when a shot from the edge of the box crashed back off the crossbar.

Final score : Lane Ends FC 2 – 1 AFC Wilo

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 12th 2010

So Lane Ends FC take revenge for their recent 3-0 reverse against today's opponents and few if any would begrudge them the victory.  They had the lion's share of possession and got the ball to the edge of the Wilo box on numerous occasions.  After hitting the bar early doors they deservedly took the lead but Wilo hit back immediately with a great goal.  After the break it was all Lane Ends and after taking the lead they should have gone on to make the game completely safe but all too often they fizzled out around the edge of the box.  AFC Wilo didn't do enough to win and lost control of the middle of the park in the second half – a disjointed performance.  Stand-in referee Alex Walker did a great job helped by all of the players who contested an honest match without a bad tackle in the game.  Very enjoyable.
