Stable Bar FC feel the force of zero tolerance.

Following our fixture last week, the RESPECT principle was definitely in force and being applied maticiculously.  Having had three players cautioned and a further two dismissed during the first half for dissent, it became apparent that a program of zero tolerance is in force.  Being reduced to nine players helped us on our way to a 10-0 drubbing and brought us

In-case players out there were thinking the comments were of a single Referee who is on his own with his comments, then you are wrong.

Everything he said is 100% accurate. The fact is that players are now more abusive and unhelpful to the referees than they have ever been. There is an attitude of total distain towards the referees and if the team have a decision given against them that, Go forbid, means they concede a goal, then the referee becomes the centre of cowardly, behind his back comments and snide remarks.

Teams have become terrible losers and arrogant winners with the referee the person receiving most abuse because of the team

Respect? – A referee writes in.

Respect? - A referee writes in.Well I must be getting the wrong games this season because the ref who made the last comments must either be brilliant or the teams he has reffed must be saints. The abuse is getting worse, the attitudes are getting worse. Most teams can't even get a proper match card to you 10 minutes before kick off. Some match cards are written on a scrap of paper! Respect, my backside! Teams are supposed to pay the ref before the game, yeah right, why is it we ref's have to chase around finding the manager to recieve our fee? Zero tolerance we were told at the begining of the season.  Well look out because I'm now at sub zero tollerance. I go out there to enjoy it Mick, football is in my blood, but enough is enough!

Would you want to be a ref?

Would you want to be a ref?As a relatively new referee to the 'circuit', each week I have had the unenvious task of taking all my training on the laws of the game and put these into practice. At the start of each game I ask to speak to the teams and tell them about how I like to operate…….

Would you want to be a ref?

I prefer to deal through the captain for any issues and I wont tolerate personal abuse. At the kick off I speak to captains one to one and ask them to help me keep down the comments us referee's 'attract' (as obviously a decision against one team is usually disputed!).

I am met in the main with nods of agreement and I have to say so far in the main I have enjoyed myself.  However there are two examples I would like to share with you of how being a ref is no easy matter and hopefully you will see which way I (and i hope I speak for my colleagues!) prefer to be treated.

One game I officiated the home team got a drubbing, I ended up booking the home captain for persistent dissent 88 minutes into the game (I admit i couldnt take any more carping it was incessant all the game).

Despite nods of agreement at the start of the game he blamed me for 'losing them the game'? A dodgy penalty decision I hear you cry – not one given.   Maybe they had a bad day and not me?

Another game the captain greeted me at the halfway line and I gave him my usual speech, he nodded and agreed to be the conduit for the team for any issues.

Any comments he made were friendly, well mannered and delivered with no maliciousness at all, we discussed many aspects of the game and at no point was he rude, condescending or nasty (despite the dodgy line calls and some decisions that he disagreed with!).

It was a joy to referee.  Every week I am amazed at how many games have no referees and given the two examples above it's no wonder why.

I urge teams to choose the captains wisely as they have a huge responsibility on their shoulders.  Help us to do a better job…..I understand respect works both ways….

Would you want to be a ref?

Club Captains failing to set an example.

Club Captains failing to set an example.Message from BFSFA and Fyldesport.  At the last secretaries meeting each Club received a pack from the FA highlighting the 'Respect the Ref' campaign. Each pack contained an arm band lettered 'Respect' for use by the team's captain. This would give the referee a quick identification and also allow the Captain to talk to the referee. It was recommended that the arm band be collected in after each game and placed in say the 1st Aid Box in order that it would be available the following game should the Captain change or be unavailable.  It was very disappointing to see so few club captains wearing the arm bands yesterday.  Also another referee was threatened on Sunday and as always the player's registration will be withdrawn. The sooner players realise we will support the ever decreasing number of referees the better.  If, as Captain, you have a 'hang up' about being seen to support the Respect campaign then maybe you're not the right man for the job.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 28th 2008.

Over the last couple of seasons our BFSFA sides have done very well in this competition but at the end of the day the trophy has ended up elsewhere.  Two season's ago Quilligans FC lost in the final and last season both Quilligans FC and SFC Poulton reached the last four once again but neither of them appeared in the final for one reason or another.  Seeing the Cup come back to the Coast would make me a happy man and although it's an extremely difficult competition to win I'm optimistic of our sides doing well in 2008/09.

Today saw the second round and at Beacon Hill High School Premier Division side Devonshire Arms FC were hosting East Lancs United from the Preston Sunday league.  The Devonshire Arms FC are a new side under the leadership of Daniel Rossi who kindly agreed to go straight into the top Division to help make it a more competitive competition.  As we reach the end of September the team are in fourth after picking up two wins from their first three league matches.  The two wins have come against Hydronics and Northern Care and despite putting four past Poulton they still ended up getting beat after conceding seven.  Their defence were missing once again in the Gledhill Cup as they lost 5-2 to Blackpool Rangers.  They'd be hoping to get off to a good start in this particular competition and go a long way.

In truth, today's opposition went into the match as second favourites.  East Lancs United FC are in the fourth Division of the Preston Lancashire Evening Post Sunday Football League where after five games they're currently down in twelfth position after picking up only three points from the first five matches.

That win came back on August 24th in a 3-2 away win against Uclan Rangers FC. Manager Shaun Hedley's men are already out of the Challenge Cup and the Presidents Cup after losing to Station FC and Ribbleton FC respectively.  In last week's Cup match against Ribbleton they played well in a 3-2 defeat against Ribbleton in which they tossed away a two goal lead.

For the third week in succession we had great conditions for Sunday football.  After a rare week without rain we again had mild temperatures hardly any wind and blue skies.  Today's referee was youngster Gregory Clayton who'd only finished work at 6am and at 10:55am the bleary eyed official got the game underway early at 10:55 with the visitors in red attacking the water tower end.

Although having the greater share of possession the Devvy were often guilty of giving it away all too cheaply.  Over intricacy was the reason and when they started to play it simple the goal came.  A ball into the box eventually fell kindly for Ex Quill's player Danny Whittaker who got his head over it and smashed it low into the far corner.  1-0.

The first thirty minutes of this match were dominated by the Devonshire captain Bryn Jones who was running the show in the centre of the pitch.  He's got a good touch for a big lad and rarely gives it away.  In addition he wins most of the aerial battles.  On 29 minutes it was Jones who interchanged a couple of neat passes before back-heeling Whittaker clean through from the half way line.  In the above picture he maintained his composure before taking it around the onrushing keeper and slotting it home – great move – great goal.  2-0.

Final score : The Devonshire Arms FC 8 – 0 East Lancs United FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday September 28th 2008.

As the form book suggested this was a one-sided Cup tie for most of the match.  The visitors never really got a grip on the game and their offensive chances were limited to a couple of free-kicks and the hard working running of the small centre forward.  The keeper pulled off some great saves and the 8-0 scoreline doesn't fairly reflect his performance.  To their credit the visitors never gave up and team spirit and morale never once faltered into pointless bickering.  They were beaten by the better side and it's as simple as that.  Even so, I hope they enjoyed the LFA away experience and we wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season.

As for the Devvy they played well after the first fifteen minutes and kept their shape throughout.  A clinical performance with lots of good performances.  The clean sheet will give them encouragement for forthcoming premier Division games.  The win sets up a tasty looking third round tie against local league rivals Blackpool Rangers which gives them an opportunity to avenge the recent Gledhill defeat.  Good performances of note from Jones, Ingham and Whittaker.
