Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 25th 2007.The second trip of the season to the Guardian pitches to watch the big Division 3 Cup quarter final between Mythop Leisure FC who were second in 3A against 3B leaders Cash & Carry Kitchens FC.  Who would go through to the semi final?

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 25th 2007.

Fortunately, the gales of last weekend had eased to give a good week of weather.  Great conditions for the Cup at last.  A semi final place against either Ward Heating FC (3B) or Pump & Truncheon Celtic FC (3A) was the prize on offer for the victors of today's match.

Home side Mythop LeisureFC are in their second BFSFA season under manager Matt Smith.  In their debut season they only lost two out of twenty-two league games winning fifteen and drawing five.  In any other season it would probably have given them the title but with champions Progress Property Management FC and runners up Blackpool Rangers FC only losing one match each Mythop's commendable effort was only good enough for third place.  The Rangers' manager, in a very rare compliment, stated that they were the best team they'd played all season.

Mythop were unhappy to only receive promotion to 3A rather than Division 2 but they quickly shrugged off that disappointment and got their heads down.  Going into late March the team are second in the league level on points with Wrea Green FC who have two games in hand.  One more point will guarantee Mythop at least runners up spot and promotion to Division 2.  Last season they reached the semi-final of the Division 3 Cup before being knocked out by AFC Dunes at Commonedge Road after extra time.  In order to reach this morning's quarter final they beat Clifton Skye FC 5-1 in the opening round before receiving a home walk-over against the now defunct Welcome Pub FC in round 2.  In the last nineteen games they've only lost twice and both defeats came in the league against Clifton Skye who beat them easily.  This season's Gledhill ended in round 2 after a 2-1 defeat against last season's rivals Progress Property.  With two crucial back to back games coming up home and away against leaders Wrea Green this will be the biggest week of Mythop's season.

Today's opponents started their Alliance participation in Division 3B as the Brunswick FC but after recently securing a new sponsor they've now renamed as Cash & Carry Kitchens FC.  Both names have been a familiar site at the top of the 3B table for many months now.  Currently, they're twelve points clear of second placed Fairhaven FC.  They only need one more league win to guarantee promotion and runners up spot.  The title looks the more likely outcome but they still require three wins from the last four games to make sure as fierce rivals Royal FC still have the games left to catch them if they slip up.

Cash & Carry Kitchens FC, like Mythop, are motley collection of lower league journeymen, ageing talent and fresh faced youth.  Their only league defeat in twenty-two league games already played came against Spindles FC in a 3-2 defeat back on September 17th.  Since then manager Russell Perrett's men have put together an impressive eighteen game run in the league and this competition.  Reaching the quarter finals has been a relative stroll.  They beat 3A strugglers Brun Grove FC 5-1 in round 1before going on to knock out the Alliance's bottom club Staining CES Electrical FC 2-0 in round 2.  Gledhill Cup interest ended in round 1 with an opening round 5-2 defeat to Blackpool Area Divers FC.  Along with Hydronics FC of Division 1 they're the only BFSFA team to break through the one hundred league goals barrier.

An intriguing fixture then to look forward to between two teams who were very much in form.  Amazingly, it looked as though most, if not all, of the players, officials and supporters had successfully negotiated the complexities involved with the move to British Summer Time. This morning's referee was Peter Jones and with the sun breaking through his whistle shattered the peace and quiet of Lytham suburbia and we were underway with Mythop in the blue and black kicking towards the sea.

The Kitchens began the game with the chill easterly breeze in their faces but they started confidently against higher league opposition.  On five minutes they took the lead.  An incisive throughball from John Whittle found Paul Stanger on-side and the prolific striker made absolutely no mistake as he rifled it under the body of the advancing Mythop keeper.  0-1.

Mythop were soon to miss Allen's presence at centre half as on 35 minutes the visitors increased the lead.  Stanger's strength saw off the challenge of Rob Cracknell.  In the above picture Stanger weighs up his options before crossing to the far post.  It still should have been cleared but more shoddy defending saw the Mythop defender miss it.  The ball fell kindly to Paul Whittle who had acres of space and ample time to smash it past Bould.  0-2.

On 43 minutes Mythop were back in the tie but we had controversy.  Midfield maestro Jimmy Duckworth showed great vision to play in James McKenzie who took the ball into the box.  A last gasp sliding tackle looked to have taken the ball but referee Jones signalled PENALTY !!!   The Kitchen's staff and players were mightily aggrieved but as usual all of their protestations got them nowhere.  In the picture below Duckworth converts the spot kick despite a great effort from Rimmington.  1-2.

After the break there was only one team in it for the first twenty minutes and that team was Mythop.  Confidence raised after the penalty just before half time they turned around into the breeze playing the best football of the match.  Pass and move, pass and move they were making great progress up the pitch.  It was of little surprise when they scored a well worked equaliser.  Andy Kozlowski looked up and played in Carl Williamson who lobbed it over the onrushing Rimmington and into the back of the net.  2-2.  Game on.

Three minutes after the goal and the Kitchens had a good shout for a penalty themselves.  John Whittle looked to have been barged over for a penalty but referee Jones waved it away.  The Kitchens looked in trouble as Mythop had by far the best of the possession whilst the Kitchens embarked on a running conversation with the Man in Black.  At this stage it looked as though there would only be one winner.

Final score :  Mythop Leisure FC 2 – 3 Cash & Carry Kitchens FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 25th 2007.

As expected this was an entertaining and closely fought Cup tie from start to finish.  Mythop Leisure tried to play their passing game throughout but in the end they came up short today.  A couple of strikers light up front they lacked a bit of punch in the attacking third this morning.  The loss of Shaggy at the back through injury was also a blow.  Still, with the score at 2-2 and their opponents down to ten men and in some disarray I expected them to go on and win it but in the end it wasn't to be.  Matt Smith's side now have to pick themselves up for some important league action in the next seven days.

Another great win then for Cash & Carry Kitchens FC who are still very much in the hunt for a league and Cup double.  They showed great resolve to regroup in the latter stages when the chip were down.  True, a couple of decisions went against them today but that's Sunday football.  You've just got to accept it and get on with it.  Arguing with patient referees is ultimately fruitless and leads to dismissals.

Top performances this morning from John Whittle (Whilst he was on the pitch) and the boy Stanger (Give up the fags and sort that cough out !) Captain Perrett led by example, strong in the tackle, fluid and accurate distribution all capped off by a match winning goal that put his side through to the semi-finals.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 18th 2007.

The 2006/07 season will be looked back upon as being fairly mild but very wet.  Not much frost, snow and ice this season but lots of wind and rain.  It was a very windy morning at Blackpool Road, St Annes and getting colder by the minute.

In all honesty, I'm not too much of a fan of either the Division 1 Cup  or the Premier Division Cup.  These are the only Cup competions I know in football that don't give teams the opportunity to play against different opposition.  If I had my way the Prem and Div 1 Cups would merge.  This would throw up some interesting and unpredictable ties.  Anyway, on the with the game in hand.

After finishing eighth in Division 1 last season the Dunes are currently down in eighth place but a strong finish in the league may see them ending up in seventh.  Only five wins from seventeen games tells its own story.  Although their league form hasn't been particularly memorable they've excelled thus far in Cup competitions.  A great run in the Gledhill took Steve Angus' team to the quarter finals where they played very well in a 3-1 defeat to Quilligans.  Earlier in the competition they'd beaten rivals AFC Dunes, Prem side Harris & Co and Brannigans Reserves.

To get this far in the Division 1 Cup they'd had to overcome CTK FC 4-1 in the opening round.  Today's quarter final opponents were Brannigans and going into late March the two sides are still to meet in the league this season.  Last season Branningans took four points after a 4-2 win and a 3-3 draw.  This morning Darren Meehan's Brannigans side were sixth in the table and with fifteen points still to play for third place is still achievable via a strong finish.

After a first round bye Brannigans' interest in the Gledhill ended in round 2 as they were beaten 6-2 by Poulton.  In the opening round of the Division 1 Cup they set up today's tie by beating Northern Care 4-0.  A semi final tie against either the New Castle or Hydronics lay in wait for the victors.

But the above preparation was for nothing as all the games at the venue were called off due to the heavy gales

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 11th 2007.

Decent weather and good pitch conditions for this morning's Gledhill semi finals.  Both matches consisted of in-form Premier Division sides taking on confident opposition from Division 1.

At Collins Park Red Rose Catering FC were taking on Jim Baker's Bloomfield Vets FC.  Whatever happened this morning reaching the semi-finals of the 40th Gledhill Cup had been a great achievement for the veterans.  The team is rich with ageing talent and full of players who are used to success.  A number of them may have played at the top level but every one of them would be trying their utmost to reach the 40th final of the Gledhill Cup.

Bloomfield have had another decent season in Division 1.  With five games left to play the side are currently in fourth place and still have every chance of finishing third.  As well as reaching the semi final of the Gledhill Cup they're also through to the last eight of the Division 1 Cup where they'll play the Philharmonic next weekend.  To get this far in the Gledhill they've had to beat some tough sides.

After a first round bye they overcame talented new boys Secure Health FC 4-3 in round 2.  Next they beat fellow Division 1 side CTK FC 3-1 in round 3 before beating Division 1 strugglers St Annes Ex Service 4-0 in round 4.

In the last eight they caused one of the shocks of this season's competition when they turned over Premier Division leaders Poulton 4-0 at Boundary Park.  The team would be well up for it this morning.  As I said before the last game the Vets are a very strong physically and have little concern for the reputation of other sides.

This morning's opponents Red Rose Catering FC were covered in their 2-1 Quarter Final win against Wrea Green on February 4th so I won't repeat myself with a review of their excellent season except to say that since that game they've picked up a further seven points from nine in the league which included a 2-2 draw against Quilligans.  A strong finish to the season could see them yet finish in third place.

Everything in place for a fascinating game of football.  This morning's referee was Mark Errington with John McDonald and son Ben assisting him on the sidelines.  A fair sized crowd were in attendance as we got underway a couple of minutes before 11am with the Vets in the dark blue kicking towards Commonedge Road.

Red Rose were finally getting to grips with the wind and on 67 minutes they finally produced the equaliser.  A decent pass over the full back played in the quick footed Danny Gillett and his shot across the keeper found the far corner. 1 -1.

The chances of going through a Gledhill semi-final without contoversy were slim and it came in abundance in the 67th minute.  Another great through ball found Tony Whittle clean through against the Red Rose keeper.  Once again Whittle won the race but his goalbound effort was handled outside the area by the keeper.  Referee Errington blew his whistle before consulting his assistant John McDonald.

The Vets players and supporters were of the view that a red card should have been produced but referee Errington ruled it accidental and a yellow was the result.

As expected with so much at stake this was a close, interesting and hard fought Cup tie from start to finish.  Heartbreaking for the Vets and their supporters to come so far and then fall at the final hurdle.  They had some good chances to increase their tally but it wasn't to be.  They gave it everything they had and deserve a lot of credit for giving a team heading for a third place finish in the Prem a mighty scare.  Whether or not the opposition keeper should have gone is one for debate but the handball certainly denied a goalscoring opportunity.  Unlucky Vets.

Congratulations to Red Rose Catering FC.  They deserve a lot of praise for standing up to the physical presence of the Vets and maintaing their discipline.  They did well to come from a goal behind and in the end two quality strikes from Danny Gillett made the difference.  Red Rose are heading for a memorable season and will no doubt prove stern opposition for Quilligans in the Bloomfield Road showpiece final in May.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 4th 2007.Out on a wet and windy Commonedge Road watching the Division 2 Cup Quarter final between West Coast Tackle Postal FC and Talbot Sports & Social Club FC.  Both teams were next door to each other in the top four of the 2A table and since Christmas the league points had been shared with a win apiece.  Who would progress through to the semis this morning?  Pictures from some of the other games are also included.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 4th 2007.

Blackpool Rangers FC may have the Division 2A title all but sewn up but going into March there are still six sides below them that still fancy themselves for a runners up spot that would bring both possible promotion to Division 1 and an evening of celebration at the Layton Institute in May.

Two of those teams met at Commonedge Road this morning in the Quarter Finals of the Division 2 Cup.  West Coast Tackle Postal FC were fourth in the table this morning two points behind this morning's opponents Talbot Sports & Social Club Fc but with a game in hand.  In the 2004/05 season West Coast were relegated from Division 1.  They'd finished in thirteenth a place ahead of bottom club Singleton Village.  Last season they regrouped and had a decent first season in 2A where they eventually finished in sixth position.

After an inconsistent start they've improved as the season's gone on.  In the last eight games they've only been beaten once.  Coming back from 4-1 down against Claremont to draw 4-4 in a recent league game epitomised the recent spirit and commitment that's been shown.  In the Gledhill a first round bye was followed by a tough match against Fleetwood Cricket Club.  After a 3-3 draw they eventually succumbed 6-2 in the replay.

To reach today's Quarter Final they thrashed Great Eccleston 7-1 in Round 1 and then had to overcome Brannigans Reserves 3-2 away in Round 2.  Daryl Prance's team were in good form and semi-final place today was a distinct possibility.

The last side to beat West Coast were today's opponents Talbot Sports & Social Club FC who won 2-1 in early February.  This was in revenge for a 4-2 league defeat they'd endured at the hands of West Coast on the first Sunday after Christmas.  Last season West Coast had the edge with two exciting 4-3 league wins but Talbot had the last laugh as they finished three points ahead of them in fifth.  Finishing fifth in the table was an excellent achievement as they'd only been promoted from Division 3A the previous season.  Currently, they're third in the table and if he Squirrel do slip up then Tony Dugdale's Talbot look good bets to secure runners up spot.

In this season's Gledhill they reached Round 2.  In early August they beat Pump & Truncheon Celtic FC in Round 1 before being beaten 3-2 by Inkmasters FC in the next Round.  They've reached the last eight of this competition by getting past Inkmasters in Round 1 before causing a big shock in Round 2 after beating the much fancied Division 2B leaders Progress Properies 2-1 at today's venue.

Out on Pitch 1 this morning which was in a terrible state prior to Christmas but credit where it's due and better late than never the council have worked hard to vastly improve the pitches at Commonedge in recent weeks.  Our official for this morning's game was Dale Harvey and he got us punctually underway with the Talbot in their Red Blue strip kicking off towards the sea.  Very cold and windy with the rain coming in from the South East.

During the half time team talk Talbot players admitted that they'd 'wasted the wind'.  Still, there was only one goal in it but if there was to be a way back for a place in the last four they had to play well against it as well as staying tight defensively.  After only three minutes of the second period their plans were undone when Ben 'Dutch' Holland headed in a Chris Brooke corner for West Coast.  1-3.

Sportspy Reports - February 25th 2007.

After last week's series of results Hydronics FC guaranteed themselves runners up spot and promotion to the top flight of Fylde Coast Sunday football.  Prior to this morning's games they were fourteen points clear of nearest rivals Fleetwood Cricket Club FC at the top of Division 1.  However, the Cricketers can still achieve 59 points so it's too early to take the collective foot off the pedal if they wish to lift the title.

59 points remained the target before today's games but I expect that to come down in the next few weeks and I'll be surprised if Hydronics don't have the title wrapped up by late March.  After finishing 5th in the 2004/05 season in Division 2B they went on to win it last season as CLS Wyre FC when finishing four points clear of Christ the King FC.  A memorable season was made complete when they also picked up the Division 2 Cup.

From the 18 league games they've played thus far this season only five points have been dropped.  Three points were lost against Fleetwood Cricket Club FC who had a great 4-1 win against them and the other two were lost to Bloomfield Vets FC in a 2-2 draw.  They're still going well in the Division 1 Cup after beating Wyre Villa in Round 1 but in the Gledhill they fell in Round 2 to Premier Division Cahoots FC.  On Wednesday evening they lost in the last minute of the last ever Compere Cup final against Arcadian but John Egan's side showed in that match they look more than capable of doing well in the Premier Division next season.

This morning they were away at leaders Northern Care FC.  The sides were meeting for the first time this season.  Very probably it was possibly for the first time ever.  In 2004/05 playing as the Mortgage Shop FC the team finished six points adrift at the bottom of the Premier Division and were duly relegated.

Another disappointing campaign followed last season when only three points saved them from a second successive relegation.  They managed to escape by finishing in twelfth just above the Central Club and the Squirrel.  This season has seen a marked improvement.  With six games left they've already exceeded last season's point's tally by four points.  They're currently in eighth but in all honesty, and even with a decent finish, perhaps seventh spot is the best they can hope for.

Dave Borrers' men have racked up five wins from the first eighteen games but it's the six draws that have left them in mid table.  A 4-0 win over Bloomfield Vets and a draw against Fleetwood CC have been the highlights of this season along with other good wins against the Dunes and the Philharmonic.  In both domestic cups their interest ended at the first hurdle.  In the Gledhill they went out 2-1 against the Golden Eagle and the Division 1 Cup they were comfortably disposed of 4-0 by Brannigans.

They enjoyed a decent run in the Lancashire Sunday Trophy with two away ties in Wigan.  They firstly beat Golborne Albion 5-2 before going out to Wigan Academicals 3-2.  Northern Care FC have amazingly had four league draws on the bounce but are still to win in 2007 after having last picked up three points on November 26th against the Vets.

Top class conditions for football this morning.  The Squires Gate pitch wasn't played on yesterday and despite the rain of late last week was in good condition.  Flat calm and mild for this morning's match against the leaders.

Referee Martin Rogers was in charge of today's proceedings and at 11am we were punctually underway with Northern Care in their famous blue strip attacking the School Road end.

Northern Care had a good start to the game and this increased their confidence as they enjoyed good spells of possession in the opposition half and a couple of chances.  It was of little surprise when they took the lead on fourteen minutes.  Mark Williams floated over the free kick and Michael 'Elvis' Donohoe spoilt his quiff by heading into the far corner.  1-0.  Live video of the goal can be seen by clicking here.

Very soon afterwards the usually reliabe Jamie Heathcote had a great chance to make it 2-0 but rushed his opportunity when clean through against the keeper.

On 33 minutes we had drama as referee awarded Hydronics a very controversial penalty.  Hydronics had swept up the field leaving Northern very short defensively.  Jamie Wright was left clear with a shot at goal from 12 yards and should have scored but the defender flew across in front of him and blocked it with his chest.  Mr Rogers saw it differently and provoked a passionate response from the Northern players and bench.

The second half started as the first ended with lots of attacking play and incident from both sides.  On 54 minutes Hydronics equalised with the best goal of the game.  A throw in from the right fell to Jamie Wright.  The big forward took the ball on a couple of paces and bent an unstoppable right footed shot past the outstretched dive of Cartmell.  2 – 2.

The Northern Care fan stood behind the goal told me he'd never seen his team play so well and with so much commitment.  “Usually, they're just a team of individuals but they're playing like a team today was one of his comments'.  On 67 minutes Northern Care took the lead once again.  Yet another set piece and more poor defending from the Division 1 leaders.  Striking similarities to the second as Phil Charton found himself in the right place once again to force it over the line.  3-2.  You can see live video of the goal by clicking here.

On seventy-seven minutes and we were level again.  Both sets of defenders will be having nightmares re set-pieces this evening.  This time it was the Northern defence and goalkeeper who failed to react as Chris Matthews towered above them all to power home Ben Hutley's corner.  The keeper should have saved it.  See the goal on live video by clicking here.

Final score :  Northern Care FC 3 – 4 Hydronics FC

Sportspy Reports - February 25th 2007.

Northern Care FC can count themselves very unlucky this morning.  They created countless chances and more than matched the Division 1 leaders in all areas of the pitch.  They scored three goals and had a number of other golden opportunities to score a few more.  The penalty decision against them was very harsh and came at just the wrong time.  Plenty of positives to take from this morning's game and similar hardworking team performances will undoubtedly bring more positive results for the remainder of the season.

As for Hydronics it was a below par performance despite the recent injuries.  They were woeful at defending set-pieces and this will have to improve in time for next season.  Maybe a return to centre half is in order for Chris Matthews.  Credit where it's due they did show some good fighting spirit and stuck together as a unit.  After this morning's results three wins from the last five will secure the title.

Referee Mr Rogers will no doubt be experiencing one of those 'why on earth do I bother?' afternoons.  It's a good job for us all that BFSFA ref's have broad shoulders.

Firstly, sincere thanks to BFSFA secretary Peter Collins for giving me access to his treasured collection of Gledhill Cup final programmes.

Unfortunately, I'm still missing fourteen programmes and would be extremely grateful if anybody can help me by locating and loaning any of these missing programmes.  This will allow me to complete the series whilst doing full justice to all the teams and players who have participated in this great competition.

The programmes I'm missing are ; 1967/68, 1970/71, 1971/72, 1972/73, 1973/74, 1974/75, 1975/76, 1976/77, 1977/78, 1978/79, 1980/81, 1982/83, 1991/92 and 1992/93.  If you can help please E-Mail me at sportspy22@aol.com.  Thanks.
