The weather finally played its part at Cottam Hall this evening where a big crowd watched on in the warm Spring sunshine as Poulton SFC and Quilligans FC fought it out for the Premier Division title.  A point would have been enough for Quilligans FC.  Final tables now updated on the sister site.

Poulton SFC 1 – 2 Quilligans FC (Cottam Hall)

Result - Monday May 17th 2010

Quilligans FC brought in a few fresh faces for this evening's big game with Pearson, Lawler, Cook and Greenall all getting a start.  Unlike Friday night it was Quilligans who were quickest out of the blocks and within twenty minutes they had raced into a 2-0 lead.  Mickey Evans showed great persistance in a battle with the defenders who failed to take the opportunity to clear.  Evans made them pay as he put the visitors ahead.  Not long afterwards, Danny Rowe took advantage of some poor defending as the defender failed to deal with the long high ball, Rowe beat him to it, took a step to his right and lashed it home.  Poulton were on the ropes.

The home side finally settled and Catlow started to impose himself in midfield.  Poulton's best chance came after Daz Hall was played through by Catlow.  With the ball on his left foot he looked set to shoot but instead decided to take it around Smith.  Wrong decision in retrospect as Smith pulled off some decent keeping to deny him.

Danny Morris had the ball in the net for Poulton but it was pulled back for offside.  A couple of neutrals directly in line said he was onside but the flag was up and the goal didn't stand.

Quilligans FC started the second half as they did the first and carved out two glorious chances to seal it.  Firstly, Rowe made the pass of the night to Baird who took it on into the box only to be denied by the feet of Davies.  Minutes later, Rowe tok it around Davies out wide and unselfishly squared it into the path of Palmer.  He looked almost certain to score but Allan Thompson pulled off a fantastic last ditch sliding tackle to take it off his toes.

Poulton made a game of it with about twenty minutes left.  Catlow's shot come cross was seized upon by substitute Carl Eastwood and his first time effort found the bottom corner.  Quills looke to be in control and kept the ball well.  Kevan Ford was dominant at the back and keeper Smith didn't put a foot/hand wrong all night.  Poulton created one further decent opportunity but Eastwood's left footed shot went well over.

In the end Quilligans FC fully deserved the win and over the season the table doesnt lie and they win the Premier Division title by a margin of five points.  Congratulations to manager Mark Spedding and all those associated with Quilligans FC.

It's been a brilliant effort all season by Fleetwood Town FC in the Blue Square North Division but at the end of the day they were just pipped for the title by rivals Southport largely due to Farsley Celtic folding.  That resulted in the play offs.  After losing 2-0 at Droylsden the second leg finished 3-1 to Fleetwood who progressed to the final on penalties.  Their opponents were Alfreton Town FC and as Fleetwood had finished higher in the table they had home advantage.

The tie was was sold out days ago so we had a capacity crowd of 4,000 on a mild Spring afternoon.  The Cod Army were out in numbers and they were in good voice.  Fleetwood started well and took the lead on nine minutes after Gareth Seddon deflected a shot past the hapless Alfreton keeper.  For the last twenty minutes of the half and the first fifteen after the break Alfreton were much the better side and deservedly equalised from the penalty spot.

Minutes later and Fleetwood grabbed the all important winner.  A free kick was floated into the box, the keeper came but didn't deal with it and Fleetwood reacted first to score a dramatic second.  Although Alfreton went close in added time Fleetwood hung on to earn the victory.  After such a good season, few if any would begrudge them their well deserved promotion.  Good luck to them next season in the Conference.

Fylde Coast dominance extends to junior football

Fylde Coast dominance extends to junior football

The success of our local adult teams along the Coast has been well documented with season's to remember for Blackpool FC, Fleetwood Town FC, Blackpool Wren Rovers FC, Poulton Town FC, Thornton Cleveleys FC and Lytham Town FC.  This has extended to local junior side YMCA FC who initially won the Junior version of the Lancashire Cup before being the first ever local side to become Northern England County Champions.  This Sunday (9th) they will be representing Northern England at Derby County FC's Pride Park ground as they attempt to become Champions of England.  Best of luck YMCA.

Fylde Coast dominance extends to junior football

YMCA – Northern England County Champions.

Fylde Coast dominance extends to junior football

Local junior side YMCA – already Champions of Lancashire, last week represented the County in the Northern England Regional Finals in Manchester.  Here, there were the best teams from every County in the North of England and Isle of Man. YMCA did Lancashire and the Fylde Coast proud by becoming the first ever side from the Blackpool and District Youth League to win these Finals and they now carry the title of – Northern England County Champions.

They will now go on to represent the North of England at Pride Park, home to Derby County Football Club on Sunday 9th May, with the chance of becoming English Champions. After winning their Lancashire Cup back in March against Culcheth Athletic from Warrington YMCA went in to this tournament knowing that only the best teams from their Counties would be there and therefore every team would be of a high standard.

The Counties being represented were, Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumberland, Durham, East Riding, Isle of Man, Liverpool, Manchester, North Riding, Northumberland, Sheffield & Hallamshire and Westmorland.  In the first game YMCA came up against Sheffield United Junior Blades. YM were superb and Jack Crawford gave YM the lead with a superb strike from 30 yards but with just 20 seconds left on the clock they gave a soft free kick away from which Sheffield equalised.

YMCA then came up against Pirelli Juniors from Cumberland. In a close contest Aiden Atchison scored YMs winner after some neat work down the right from Conah Bishop.  In the final group game YMCA came up against Teeside Athletic from North Riding. Despite being on top in this game they couldnt capitalise and the game finished 0-0.  This left YMCA top of the group with Sheffield Junior Blades and Pirelli Juniors still to play. Sheffield won 1-0 which meant that the YMCA and Sheffield Junior Blades had to have a penalty shoot out to see who progressed in to the semi final. In a nervous shoot out Aiden Atchison, Johnny Airey, James Rowley and Conah Bishop all scored but the hero was keeper James Lawrance, he pulled off two top class saves to ensure a shoot out victory.

The semi finals came upon us and while the sun was beaming down as it had been all day, two excellent footballing sides took to the pitch. YMCA and Hessle Sporting from East Riding produced some excellent football throughout. YM took the lead with when a Conah Bishop corner was headed home by Bradley Garner. Hessle then equalised but with 5 minutes to go Aiden Atchison scored one of his most important goals for the club with a well taken lob which was enough to send YMCA in to the final.

Getting to the final of such a high profile tournament was a massive achievment, but YMCA were not content with just getting to the final, they were there to win it. They put in a superb performance against Netherley Wood Lane Legion, from Liverpool. YMCA played again some of the best football seen on the day and it was no surprise when captain Carl Kennedy was on hand to fire the ball home after the keeper had spilled the ball. With a minute to go and YM cruising a defensive error let the tricky left winger for Liverpool in and he equalised sending the game in to extra time. Aiden Atchison somehow had a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed, this spurred YMCA on to go for victory. Russel Townsend was hauled down giving YMCA a penalty and upstepped Aiden Atchison. He slotted the ball in to the bottom left hand corner sending the YMCA players in to huge celebrations as they held on for victory.

With the YMCA now crowned as Northern England Champions, former footballer Clayton Blackmore and England womens footballer Sue Smith presented the players with their medals.

Keeper James Lawrance was also named goalkeeper of the tournament, after pulling off two superb saves in the penalty shoot out and and also an excellent double save in the semi final. YMCA will now go on to represent the North of England this Sunday 9th May at Pride Park for the chance to become champions of England. We wish them the best of luck

Some names I'm sure we'll see playing Saturday and Sunday football in the future.

At Bloomfield Road watching Blackpool FC as they looked to cement their place in this season's Championship play off places.  Equalling or bettering the result of Swansea City FC would be enough to clinch sixth spot.

Sportspy Extra - Sunday May 2nd 2010

Last July now seems a long time ago.  During the month Blackpool FC played a friendly away at Burscough FC.  If you have either the time or the inclination it's well worth another look at this article as it was one of the first times the team had played under new manager Ian Holloway.  If you look at the team that played that day during the first half at Burscough you'll see that Adam and Campbell aside almost all of them would play a major role in the Seasider's successful campaign.

It's worth remembering that Holloway inherited much of the squad so a lot of credit is due to the likes of Simon Grayson, Tony Parkes and Steve Thompson.  Holloway made the best of what he had been given, he gave them belief, put in place radical formations and told them to go and play football offensively everywhere we played and it made for a memorable season, the best for many, many years.

As the season kicked off every bookmaker and pundit cowardly predicted that we would be relegated.  Every so called 'big' team like Middlesborough, Forest, Wigan, Newcastle etc thought that they had the right to beat us and looked silly after the event.  I was hoping for a mid table finish last August but as the season progressed I thought we had a great chance of finishing in the top ten but a strong finish gave us an excellent chance of a play off spot.

With the new South stand recently opened today's game was a sell out.  Bettering or equalling the result of Swansea FC who were at home to Doncaster FC would give us that final play off spot.  After appearing to win the toss skipper Adam surprisingly elected to kick towards our noisy support in the South during the first half.  Blackpool FC were largely inconsistent throughout the opening 45 minutes with poor distibution and a failure to retain possession.  The visitors took the lead after Maynard turned and fired it over Gilks who was out of position on the penalty spot. 0-1 and that's how it stayed until half time.

Blackpool FC started the second half much brighter and with the home support still fully behind them they started to impose themselves.  Soon after the restart Dobbie came on for DJ Campbell.  After a couple of close calls Blackpool FC finally equalised.  A free-kick from the left was expertly swung in from Adam and the legend that is Brett Ormerod threw himself at the ball and headed it past the keeper.  1-1

Blackpool FC largely bossed the rest of the second half but the crowd knew that a Swansea winner would see us out of the play off's unless we scored a winner.  Despite going close on a number of occasions Blackpool FC just couldn't find a second but in the end it didn't matter as Swansea FC could only draw 0-0 at home to Doncaster FC.  After taking a point away and hammering them at home they can have no complaints.

So, on to the play off's and it's a double header against Nottingham Forest FC.  We may have beaten them twice but they showed in the last fifteen minutes of the recent game after they had brought on Earnshaw and Blackstock that they're a very good team.  We need to be at our best at the back if we're to reach Wembley but we've nothing to lose and everything to gain.  The pressure is on Forest.  Come on Blackpool, you can do it.

Congratulations to Ian Holloway and his team.
