Shock news: Dennis Peters is not happy.

Shock news: Dennis Peters is not happy.Sigh – Thirty-four teams have not still not registered a player for the coming season. Attention is drawn to rule 12 that all teams must have registered 12 prior to 01/08/08 or they will be fined.  If you have signed a player who is new to you it is advisable to ring GRUMPY on 391055 or 07950 966 067 to check that they have not already signed for another team or owe money to either the league or the L F A. Players signing for more than one team will have their registration refused for the first four games after signing on and will be considered to be registered with the first who submitted a form. Teams playing a player who signed with another team or has outstanding debts will be deemed to have played an unregistered player and as such be fined and face a point deduction.GET THE FORMS IN NOW AND IF POSTING THEM MAKE SURE THE POSTAGE IS CORRECT

Ex player dies.

Ex player dies.Sadly, Dave McLean died on Friday night in his sleep at home.  Macca was a regular follower of Quilligans FC and until poor health affected him recently he rarely missed a game.  The older ones will recall him as an uncompromising centre half for Express Cleaners FC who finished early because of chronic back problems.   He scored the winner (a 25 yarder) in the 1985 Gledhill final and also picked a winner's medal up when Express won the 1988 Gledhill final.  I'm sure the funeral arrangements will appear in the Gazette.  Sincere condolences to all concerned.

Urgent call for referees.

Urgent call for referees. The first few weeks of the season are usually the most difficult for supplying a full compliment of referees and this season looks to be especially hard hit as we hear that approximately ten whistlers have called it a day for one reason or another.  It's very likely that all games will not be covered by official referees.  This is an 'SOS' to any referees who are available to officiate (male or female) on Sunday mornings or anybody who would like to become one.  If you can help please contact Dave Connor on 07980061402 or by E-Mail at dcno1957@ hotmail.com  Respect the Ref !

Zero tolerance on jewellery 2008/09

Zero tolerance on jewellery 2008/09The Lancashire FA are advising all match officials at all levels to fully implement Law 4 and ensure that no jewellery of any kind should be worn or taped.  This is to ensure the safety of the players.  You have been warned.  You cannot play if you do not adhere to this rule.  I suggest you leave it at home rather than leaving it loose in bags/changing rooms etc.

Club secretaries – Don’t leave it late to affiliate.

Club secretaries - Don't leave it late to affiliate. The BFSFA have stated in the strongest terms the upshot of not registering with the LFA on time.  Unless clubs are registered they will not be allowed to play football anywhere.  Furthermore because clubs will not be able to fulfill their fixtures the Club could incur fines and points deductions as per the rules.  If you have any queries about the registration please call Peter Collins on 764357 urgently. If you have registered and not given him your number it is on the receipt under FAU…………..Do it now.

BFSFA Divisional league structure 2008/09Never an easy task at the best of times but this summer it's been especially difficult for the committee but after a lot of hard work here is the BFSFA Divisional structure for 2008/09.  If you're unhappy with your allocated ground please express your concerns to fixtures secretary Carole Cox in writing.  The structure is still 'provisional' although further changes are unlikely.  Two weeks to kick off.  Let the countdown begin………..

Trouble on Mereside.

Trouble on Mereside.Firstly, no more bookings are being taken for Mereside until Thursday as Dawn is on holiday.  Secondly, all Sunday slots are now taken up to 6pm.  Thirdly, for some reason the Council are not happy about cars parking on the grass.  Also litter is just being left (Poor).  Although there is little sensible alternative to parking traffic wardens and tickets have been threatened.  I suggest you park legally on the road or in the nearby mean streets.  There is a distinct possibility that friendlies already booked may be cancelled by the council because of these problems.

Sunday football legend calls it a day. After thirty-four consecutive seasons in the Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Football Alliance Bloomfield Vets FC player Les Hewitt finally decides to hang up his boots at the age of fifty-one.

In 1973 I was in the fourth year at Roseacre Junior School, Gladys Night & the Pips were riding that Midnight Train to Georgia, Elton John was singing about Crocodile Rock and Tony Orlando and Dawn were tying a Yellow Ribbon Round the 'Ole Oak Tree'.  Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols were still a couple of years away and Sunderland FC were upsetting the mighty Leeds United FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley (Click to view).  Unbeknown to me sixteen year old Les Hewitt was about to start his first season in Fylde Coast Sunday football with Red Lion FC.

You may also notice regular BFSFA referee Ross Swift in the coat far right (cool wellies).  Other players pictured include Paul Gaunt, Steve Magauley (Bottom left), John Bridge, Johnny Rightly and Ronnie Morris.  The owner of this picture John 'Bones' Cooper is also on there.

Les Hewitt went on to play an amazing thirty-four consecutive seasons in the Blackpool & Fylde Sunday Football Alliance.  His 'weather worn' almost gargoyle like facial features are testament to thirty-four winters driving through the mud at venues such as Moor Park and battling against the freezing rain and gales of Commonedge Road.

At the end of the 2007/08 season nearing the age of fifty-one years old Les finally decided to hang up his boots and announce his well earned retirement.  Fyldesport.com recently caught up with Les and asked him a couple of questions about his long Sunday footballing career.

Clubs played for?

6 – Red Lion FC (twice); Churchtown FC; Boars Head FC; King Edward FC; FC Co-op; Saddle FC and finally Bloomfield Vets FC.

Only six clubs in 34 seasons is a great show of loyalty and commitment.  Some individuals played for six different clubs last season!

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

How many appearances ?

He's no record of the actual number of appearances and to my knowledge neither has anybody else.  On a conservative estimate based on 34 seasons * 25 league games plus three cup games per season = 952.  Don't forget that he also played Saturdays for many of those seasons.

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

 How many goals ?

Once again there are no official records but Les was a 30 goals a season man from his debut right up to the days of the King Eddie side that folded in 1993.

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

Sunday League career highlight?

Firstly winning the Prem with the old King Edward FC side that had been promoted consecutive seasons since starting in the bottom division. Also scoring and winning the Gledhill Cup at Bloomfield Road again also with King Edward FC.

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

Toughest opponent ?

Dave Reagen (Redgie) centre-half that played with King Edward FC. Les played against him many times when Les was with Red Lion FC.

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

What about your alleged poor disciplinary record?

Only joking – In 34 seasons Les never received a caution or a card of any colour or description – Yet another amazing Hewitt statistic.

Things you'll miss about Sunday football ?

Everything about it – the lads, dressing room banter, the post match pint, playing and winning trophies – everything really.

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

Things you'll miss the least ?

Les states putting his contact lenses in before every game and in his early days – having to walk his hangover off to sober up to be able to play.

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

What will you be doing now on Sunday mornings ?

Watching of course.

Will you still be available for the Fyldesport Vets FC ?

Of course!!

Favourite Sunday football venue played at ?

Best player played with ?

Best player played against ?

Kevin Curtis (ex-Mammas FC)

Any tips for today's layabouts on being able to play for so many years ?

Be lucky by staying injury free – but more than anything – Les says he loves the game so much and that’s what has kept him going for so long.

That's it then lads – it's the end of the road for the boots, shin pads and those famous 'lucky' pants (Watch out as they'll soon be appearing in the Bloomfield WMC raffle!)

Sunday football legend calls it a day.

I've seen many players that don't make it past February in their first season in Sunday Football as the rigours of the Fylde Coast winter often takes its toll on today's mollycoddled, PS2 obsessed, alcopop supping mummy's boys so Les deserves every credit for turning out every Sunday for all of those 34 seasons.

He's the archetypal Sunday footballer and few if any would disagree that he's a worthy candidate for the bfsfa.com/fyldesport hall of fame.  Congratulation's Les and we hope you still remain involved with Sunday football.

So my message to you all is BEAT THAT !

If you think that you know someone that's been involved with Sunday football and deserves similar accolades in a similar article then write and tell me all about it at sportspy22@aol.com  I can think of a good number of likely candidates but why not nominate them yourselves?
