Fyldesport Vets XI update.

Fyldesport Vets XI update. Thanks to a healthy number of replies the Fyldesport Vets XI is beginning to take shape (?) for our inaugural match against the visiting Kent side in April.  As you'll see we're currently top heavy with 'ugly ageing spoilers' so we're now looking for players with skill, craft, guile, creativity, striking ability and hopefully attractiveness to complete the dream team.  Do you fit the bill, (Over 35, able bodied, enthusiastic and committed)?  If so please contact me as soon as you can.  First come first served.  Places going fast.  All players are  guaranteed at least half a game. sportspy22@aol.com

Fyldesport Vets XI update.

Don't overly worry about the listed positions – these will no doubt change on the day.

Average age – 40 and rising!

John Miles from Blackpool Rangers FC has kindly agreed to provide the full kit, net, corner flags, first aid kit and footballs.  Because of this, and in typical Sunday football tradition, we've therefore decided to make him captain.

We're still to find a venue.  I expect we'll try and hire a pitch on Commonedge but Collins Park may be available if we can obtain permission from the league.  We've now found a referee, Mr Lee Willetts will officiate but forever the optimist, we're still after a couple of volunteer linesmen.

As a reminder, the game is on Saturday April 26th (KO time to be decided).  I expect we'll head back to the Shovels afterwards where we'll organise a buffet.

If any of the fortunate selections have to cry off for any reason please let me know ASAP in order that we can recruit replacements.

Contributions for all expenses incurred will be expected from both teams.

Further updates to follow.

Wet weekend statistics – January 2008.

Wet weekend statistics - January 2008.A complete wash out this weekend as the wet weather accounted for the whole of the Sunday football programme.  To help relieve the boredom here are the latest statistics for each Division.  Which team are on an unbeaten run of 45 league games?  Who's gone 18 matches without a win?  Which side is top of the 3A form table? It's all here.  I should get out more.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday January 13th 2008.The weather affected this morning's listed Gledhill Cup quarter finals but at Commonedge Road the tie between the Waterloo Hotel FC of Division 1 and the Queens FC of Division 2B went ahead as planned.  Who would make it through to the semi-finals?

Sportspy Reports - Sunday January 13th 2008.

The months of December and January on the Fylde Coast are a challenging period for playing Sunday morning football.  Many matches are lost to weather during this spell and when they do go ahead the added elements of mud, driving rain, gale force winds, snow, ice and frost all add a different dimension to the game.  However, if teams do not display the right and proper manly attitude and adapt well to the conditions then the chances of lifting silverware in the Spring are greatly diminished.

Commonedge Road was in a fairly mean mood this morning with a gusting southerly wind.  Eight games were listed for the venue and thanks to its famous drainage all of them finally went ahead as planned.

The major attraction took place on Pitch 2 where the Waterloo Hotel FC of Division 1 were taking on the Queens FC of Division 2B in the last eight of this season's Gledhill Cup.  Since gaining promotion to Division 1 in the 2003/04 season Darren Meehan's team have established themselves as a decent Division 1 side.  In the last three season's the team has finished 5th, 7th and 5th respectively playing as Brannigans FC.  This season they've changed their name to the Waterloo Hotel FC and currently they're lying in ninth spot although they do have a number of games in hand over the teams above them.

In round 1 they received an automatic bye.  Round 2 saw then knock out Bar 19 FC of 3B 5-1.  Doubts over the Old England continuing in Sunday football resulted in another bye in round 3.  No such luck though in round 4 as they pulled out an in-form Dunes side of Division 1 but they progressed thanks to a 3-1 win.  They reached the final of the Division 1 Cup a couple of season's back where they lost to Harris & Co.  Reaching the semi-finals of the Gledhill Cup would at least match that achievement.

As for opponents Queens FC they're having a great season.  Playing as Fleetwood Kings FC they finished sixth in 2B last season which was rather disappointing.  This season, the team have been in top form having lost only once in all domestic competitions.  That defeat came last time out against promotion rivals Saddle FC just before Christmas.  The team are currently fifth in the table and are no doubt looking forward to an exciting run-in where any of the top six sides in the Division still have an opportunity of winning the league.

Reaching the quarter-finals of the Gledhill Cup is a creditable achievement for a 2B side.  No bye in Round 1 for the Queens as they beat the Central Club 5-2.  It took another away victory in round 2, this time a 6-1 win against the Trades Club to put them through to round 3 where they pulled off one of the shocks of the season in beating Blackpool Rangers 2-0.  That still represents Rangers' only loss of the season so far. A more fortunate draw in Round 4 saw them see off 3B's South Beach 9-3.

Even without the added elements of the weather this was always an unpredictable tie.  Undoubtedly Sunday morning Cup football at its best to look forward too.  This morning's official was top referee John Hay and in front of a sparse crowd boosted he got the game underway with the Waterloo in the orange kicking off towards the sea at 11:08am.

This match took a while to settle down which was unsurprising as these sides were probably meeting for the first time.  Although possession was shared the Queens enjoyed the better chances.  On 12 minutes a punch by Waterloo keeper Kevin Kennerley fell to the edge of the box and the resultant shot was almost deflected in.  On 25 minutes Kennerley had to tip a long range effort over the bar and from the resultant corner the Queens went close once again.

Surprisingly, after the late first half equaliser from Queens, the Waterloo started off the second period much the stronger.  They were almost camped in the opposition third for the first ten minutes.  Queen's keeper Williamson's handling deteriorated as his box was peppered with corners and free kicks.  In the picture below a goal line block on 55 minutes saved the Queens from going behind.

Final score :  The Waterloo Hotel FC 3 – 1 Queens FC

Sportspy Reports - Sunday January 13th 2008.

A major win then for the Waterloo Hotel FC who reach the semi final of the Gledhill Cup for the first time in the club's history.  A proud day for manager Meehan who more than recognises the importance of such an achievement.  The Queens put them under a fair amount of pressure in the first half but the score at the break of 1-1 was a fair reflection of both team's efforts.

The Waterloo Hotel's defence have played together for a very long time and the back four of Nicholls, Percival, Green and Sumner had to play well to nullify the threat of Perkes and Moran who have been on great goalscoring form in recent weeks.  Keeper Kennerley just adds to the quality.  Up front Derby worked hard and deserved his goal whilst Chadwick and Lisgo provided good ball throughout.

The Queens were not as effective in the second half as the Waterloo played some of their best football.   The Queens can now concentrate on trying to achieve promotion to Division One.

The Waterloo can now sit back in relation to the Cup and await their fellow three semi-finalists but if they're hoping for an easy draw they can forget it.  Good luck to them in the semi finals.

Top refereeing this morning from John Hay in a very well contested Cup quarter final in which both teams more than played their part.

Mick Elgee.

Mick Elgee, 39, has been a familiar face on the Fylde Coast amateur footballing scene for many years.

The Blackpool born forward has turned out for a whole host of clubs both on a Saturday and Sunday.  This season Mick has been turning out for Northern Care Reserves FC in Division 1.  Northern Care FC's 1st team game against Red Rose Catering FC has been called off tomorrow as a mark of respect.

Mick was also heavily involved with Broughton Amateurs FC where he was assistant player/manager. The forward/winger also used to play for three of our Saturday sides in the shape of Wren Rovers, Squires Gate and Blackpool Mechanics.

On a Sunday he played for Matrix, Lancashire Double Glazing, Whiteheads TV, H & A, The Mortgage Shop, Arcadian, Reform FC and top nineties side West Coast Transmissions FC who reached the Gledhill final on three occasions.

Sincere condolences to the family, friends and team-mates of Mick Elgee from all of those involved in the Fylde Coast amateur footballing community.

If you wish to add a tribute then website 'members' may wish to add a comment to this story.  Alternatively, you can send me an E-Mail to sportspy22@aol.com and I'll add the content to this article.  I'd also be grateful for any pictures of Mick that I can post.  If possible, please E-Mail them to me.

Two men killed after garage collapses

The scene of the accident

The scene of the accident

TWO men were killed after a garage collapsed on top of them.  They were demolishing the building last night at the rear of a bungalow in Rossall Road, Cleveleys, when it caved in, trapping them both under the rubble.

Fire crews from Bispham and Fleetwood were at the scene within minutes as a massive rescue operation – involving 35 firefighters – was launched. Police and ambulance teams joined the frantic rescue bid while specialist search and rescue crews were drafted in. Tragically their efforts were in vain as both men died at the scene.

Station manager Simon Bone of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two fire engines responded to a report of a male trapped under the rubble of a collapsed garage at 6.20pm. “Upon arrival fire officers were faced with a detached brick and concrete garage where the roof of the garage had collapsed inside leaving two side walls unstable.

“When further investigations were conducted it was established a second male was also trapped beneath the rubble of a concrete roof.”

“Fire crews and our Urban Search And Rescue crew from Leyland used specialist lifting equipment to release the casualties.” Police sealed off a large area as firefighters tried to rescue the trapped men from the property which is near the junction of Westmorland Avenue.

At 9.45pm an Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed one man had died. Forty five minutes later they said a second man had been pulled dead from the rubble. A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said:

“We were called to deal with two male casualties from this incident. Both were declared dead at the scene.”

Officers from the Health and Safety Executive are now at the scene to investigate the cause of the collapse. A spokeswoman said: “The details we have at this stage is two men were demolishing a garage which collapsed on top of them.”Both men have died.” Police and emergency crews left the scene at 11pm and the road was re-opened.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday January 6th 2008.

Two of our Alliance sides have reached the quarter-finals of the lancashire Sunday Trophy this season and as I write Blackpool Rangers could yet make it three if they win away against Rochdale side Success to the Plough FC this morning.  Whatever, happened today the BFSFA has done well and continues to improve its standing in this difficult competition.

Along with last season's losing finalists Quilligans who play away against Wigan side Woodhouse Athletic this morning fellow Premier Division side Poulton SFC have also made it through to the last eight.  They were away today against Preston side New Meadow Street Labour Club FC.  In recent season's New Meadow have done very well in the Sunday Trophy.  In 2004/05 they also reached the last eight and in the following season they were beaten in the final by D&P Copperpot FC who knocked out Quilligans on their way to victory.

What happened to them last season is something of a mystery.  The Preston Prem league table shows them finishing bottom after losing all of their 22 games.  This, after losing narrowly in the previous season's Sunday Trophy final is unlikely without a good reason.  Maybe I'd find out what it was today.

This morning Chris Collins' New Meadow were third in Division 1 of the Preston Sunday league miraculously back in form with a 100% league record of five wins out of five.  Their only defeat of the season came recently in the Challenge Cup where they were beaten by Premier Division side Preston Town.  In the Sunday Trophy they'd already knocked out two of our Premier Division sides.  In round 1 they beat Shake FC 12-2 before reciving a home walkover against Milton in round 2.  In round 3 another home victory saw them beat Layton Institute 5-1.  Fellow Preston side Unicorn FC were the victims in round 4 as Meadow won 2-1 and in round 5 it was the end of Highfield Social FC's involvement as they lost 3-0 at home.

After early season form few would have predicted Poulton SFC reaching the last eight.  Two league defeats early on combined with a number of player defections left them struggling but every credit to them as they've picked up form in recent months.  Going into the new year they're still well placed in the table with games in hand on the leaders.  Next weekend they take on Quilligans in the last eight of the Gledhill Cup.

In the Sunday Trophy they received a bye in Round 1 before opening up with 6-2 home win over Westdene in Round 2.  Local side the Saddle FC were their third round opponents and they went down 6-3.  In round 4 they pulled off a great 3-1 win over top Preston Prem side Acre Gate Lane Labour Club who are still the favourites to take the Preston title this season.  Round 5 saw Poulton knock out another Alliance side in the shape of Pulcinellas FC, 6-1 was the final scoreline.

Would New Meadow make it hat-trick of Alliance Premier Division scalps in the Sunday Trophy this season or would it be Poulton who made it through to the semi-finals?  Penwortham, Preston was the venue.  The weather was dry, bright, relatively calm and not overly cold.

Referee Steve Foster was the man in charge assisted by two neutral linesmen and at 11am he got proceedings under way with Poulton in the red kicking off.

Poulton settled down quickly and they enjoyed much the better of the opening exchanges.  On seven minutes the Meadow keeper pulled off a great low save.  A minute later he dropped the ball at the feet of Carl Eastwood who slotted home but the liner's flag was up for offside.

In the first twenty minutes Poulton had at least four golden opportunities to take the lead put a combination of wayward finishing and great goal-keeping by the busy Tony Adjecovic kept them at bay.

On 24 minutes the home side created their first real opportunity.  Michael Doyle was causing Poulton problems in the middle of the park with his pacey runs.  He played a good through ball but the resultant shot went wide.

As the first half neared its conclusion Poulton continued to push for an opener.  Young Kennerley was causing havoc down the left flank and providing decent end product to the strikers.  In the photo below Poulton look certain to score but once again New Meadow escape.

My watch was showing 45 minutes played as Poulton's first half dominance finally paid dividends.  A long ball down the flank found Gary Pett onside and this time he made no mistake as he maintained his composure to drive the ball past Adjecovic into the far corner.  0-1 and no more than Poulton deserved.  We only had time for the restart before referee Foster blew his whistle for half time.

After shrugging off the disappointment of the second goal and bedding in the three substitutes New Meadow at last began to play some decent football.  For the first time in the match they were winning the second ball and creating a few good spells of offensive pressure.  On 52 minutes a header looped over Hesketh and was just about cleared by the poulton defenders.  However, New Meadow  still looked vulnerable to the quick breaks of Poulton.  On 65 a long Hesketh goal kick was brilliantly controlled out on the wing.  The immediate cross found Eastwood but the keeper's chest denied him from point blank range.

As we entered the last twenty minutes of the match it was do or die for New Meadow.  Players on both sides were going down with cramp as the sticky pitch took its toll.  The home side were on top and giving it everything. In the picture below Worgan pulls out a great save from Hesketh on 73 minutes.

On 82 minutes Franny Johnrose had a great opportunity to pull one back for the home side.  A long cross to the far post looked perfect for the sub but his header just went wide – Agony.  On 88 minutes however New Meadow finally pulled one back.  After an injry to a Poulton player the ball was thrown back towards the Poulton box but Hesketh stayed on his line.  This forced the defender into clearing for a throw.  The long throw was headed out towards the edge of the box where Matt Williams was waiting.  He beat Hesketh with a dipping volley from twenty yards.  1-2 and game on.

Few, if any, could argue that the best team progressed through to the semi finals.  Poulton dominated for the first hour and created a hatful of good chances.  New Meadow were lucky to only be one down at the break.  The early goal in the second half was crucial for the visitors and despite a big improvement from the home side in the second period they were always fairly comfortable.

It was a great team performance from Poulton today with some big performances all the way though the side.  The forwards held the ball up well and worked hard, the defence looked solid in front of the confident keeper, especially in the air from start to finish and the midfielders were tenacious in the tackle and hardly lost a second ball all day.  Young Kennerley worked his socks off and desrved his goal and just about edged my man of the match.

As for New Meadow they'll reflect on a performance that didn't deserve the victory.  Their man of the match was undoubtedly keeper Adjecovic who kept them in the match following countless great saves and blocks – he can count himself to be unlucky to be on the losing side.  Worgan was committed and Doyle was good on the ball through midfield.  Manager Collins and his squad can now concentrate on staying unbeaten in the league whilst engineering an immediate reurn back to the Preston Sunday league Premier Division.
