Stable Bar FC look ahead to the 2008/09 season.

Stable Bar FC look ahead to the 2008/09 season. The Stable Bar FC, (Div 3B and staying there), are looking for new players to strengthen their team for next season.  Their first season has been a baptism of fire with the standard in 3B being pretty good compared to previous years and we need good players of all ages, shapes and sizes to up our level of competitiveness.    Home games should again be at Commonedge Road, with training during the season at Stanley Park on the All Weather Pitches.  No time wasters, only players with 100% commitment who want to see the season through good times and bad should make contact.  In particular, a goalkeeper, midfielders and strikers are desperately required.  Contact Dave Pearse via email only at davepearse1@blueyonder.co.uk and he will provide details of training etc.

Sportspy Reports – Sunday March 9th 2008.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 9th 2008.Lytham St Annes High School was the venue for this morning's Division 3A fixture between strugglers Ansdell FC and DB Builders FC. Both sides had marked this fixture for three points but who would come out on top?

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 9th 2008.

Once again pre-season expectation has failed to materialise for both of these clubs.  The Division 3A league table at start of play had them separated only by goal difference with Ansdell just being ahead on goal difference.  Both sides have only managed to gain sixteen points although Ansdell currently have three games in hand.  In the thirteen team Division Ansdell were in eleventh and DB Builders were in twelfth.

Home side Ansdell FC scraped promotion at the end of the 2005/06 season after finishing seventh.  Last season they finished in a respectable eighth place and had high hopes this season for a promotion push but it wasn't to be.  Boardroom upheaval and player unrest have both resulted in a difficult campaign.  By the end of September they had no points on the board after four straight league defeats and they'd been knocked out in the first round of the Gledhill Cup by Great Eccleston.

Back to back wins in October against Pump & Truncheon Celtic and the Ship, Fleetwood represented their only notable spell.  They also went out of the Divisional Cup following a 4-3 defeat to Progress Sports & Social although this represented one of their better performances of the season.  With eight games left to play there's still hope for a positive finish for Ben Wiseman's side as they begin to look towards next season.

Opponents DB Builders FC have five games left to play and a finishing position of tenth looks to be their best hope at present.  Mark Miles has been active in the transfer market although the current squad are still some way off blending into a promotion challenging unit.  They too have managed five wins.  Unlike Ansdell they had a decent start and unusually put together a three match unbeaten league run in September.  At that time they had seven points on the board and had reached the third round of the Gledhill after a first round bye was followed by a 6-1 victory over the Ship, Fleetwood.

Everything looked just dandy for the new manager but since then they've only managed to pick up nine more points against bottom club Brun Grove (Two wins) and Autoweld who they hammered 6-0 in one of the shock results of the season.  Gledhill interest ended in Round 3 as they bravely went down 8-2 to Premier Division side Poulton.  Divisional Cup interest ended in the opening round after they lost 6-1 to Pump & Truncheon Celtic FC.  Recent form has been poor as they've only managed to pick up three points from the last twenty-one available.  More worryingly was the fact that they'd only managed to score one goal in the last four games.

In the last three seasons DB Builders finished 7th in 2004/05, 9th in 2005/6 and tenth last season.  Perennial strugglers they'll do well to not finish second bottom this time around.  Both teams were meeting for the first time this season.  Last season the league points were shared with a win apiece.  All set then for a real relegation scrap.  The weather at the High School this morning was bright with a chill wind blowing in off the golf course.  The lull before tonight's expected storm.  Today's referee was Mr Lee Singleton and at 11:05 his whistle got the match underway with DB Builders in the green strip kicking towards the college.

A comfortable home victory then for Ansdell FC in this bottom of the table clash.  In truth, this game was over at half time as Ansdell turned around with the advantage of the wind.  Opponents DB Builders were lacking in all departments today and a goals tally of only one in five matches tells its own story.  Poor marking at the back allowed Danny Garth a relatively easy hat-trick.  Only keeper Peewee Pritchard deserves any recognition on today's performance.

Ansdell worked hard today and deserved the points and the clean sheet.  Liam Cowgill was instrumental in the middle of the park as the main Ansdell play maker and Danny Garth deserves credit for his hat-trick.  Both sides are now looking towards next season when more effort and consistency is required from both sets of players.

Referee Singleton had a good game day receiving positive comments from both teams.

The match was underway with Preston in their white and black and the BFSFA in an appropriate tangerine and white strip.  After the early exchanges Blackpool had most of the offensive possession forcing a string of corners that were expertly delivered by Swallow although nobody could get on the end of them.  Last minute call up Chris Cairns was causing problems for the Preston defence and Sam Gorrie was busy down the right flank.

On 17 minutes Blackpool took the lead.  There looked to have been an infringement just inside the Preston box but play continued and Danny Rowe with one of his first touches of the game hit a low powerful drive across the keeper and into the far corner.

Two minutes later and Blackpool were two up.  Sam Gorrie did very well to chase back and win the ball from a Preston offensive move.  The ball was played to Joe Booth who showed great foresight to lob the keeper from inside the centre circle.  The ball hit the net without bouncing. A quality strike that will live long in the memory for all those who witnessed it.

The Preston side were dangerous and played some good football to feet.  On 28 minutes they were awarded a free kick.  It was floated in a Preston header came back off the post – unlucky.

On 35 minutes the home side pulled one back.  A defensive slip by Jon Simmons allowed Preston striker Alex Rendall a clear run in on goal.  Being 2-0 down many strikers would have shot early but the player showed great composure to dance around Blackpool keeper Tony Clowes and smash it home.

Three minutes later and Preston were almost level.  Paul Paynter went on a powerful run, he beat a couple of players and burst into the box but his low shot was well saved by Clowes who stood up well to him.  Preston finishing the half the stronger.

Half time score :  Preston Sunday League 1 – 2 BFSFA

BFSFA win the Carberry Cup.

Presston started off the second half where they had left off.  Almost immediately they forced a corner which came back off the post.  Further corners were created and Blackpool were looking a little shaky at the back.

For the first fifteen minutes of the second half Preston were pressing hard for an equaliser but eventually Blackpool once again began to pick up the pace.  On 67 minutes Robbie Boal fired in a thirty yard drive that the keeper could only palm away.  It fell to Danny Rowe but although he did well to keep the fast moving ball down he hit it wide.

A minute later and the two goal cushion was restored.  The awesome Cairns was once again making the defenders dizzy with his close ball control.  A little shimmy took him to the by-line and his pinpoint cross found the unmarked head of Tony Swallow who made no mistake from eight yards.

Blackpool then put in a hard fifteen minutes of defensive play all over the pitch and although Preston never gave up they rarely failed to trouble second half keeper Dave Stevenson.  In the end they ran out deserved winners and few could argue with the end result.

BFSFA win the Carberry Cup.

Final score :  Preston Sunday League 1 – 3 BFSFA

BFSFA win the Carberry Cup.

Despite a few last minute selection headaches BFSFA manager Mark Spedding was more than happy with the result.  Many players put in big performances and everyone of them played well.  Worthy of special mention were Sam Gorrie who was outstanding in the first half as was Joe Booth in midfield.  It's good to see Tony Swallow returning to full fitness and his work rate was exceptional this evening.  Chris Morris was solid in the heart of the defence.  My man of the match goes to Chris Cairns who had a stormer.  He won loads of ball in the air, held it up well rarely giving it away, created the killer third goal and kept the Preston defence busy for the full ninety minutes.

Well worth the trip and I look forward to watching the Carberry Cup being defended back in Blackpool next season.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 2nd 2008.Moor Park, Bispham was this morning's venue looking in on two teams for the first time this season.  Frenchman's Cove FC of Division 3B were hosting Division 3A leaders Progress Sports & Social FC in the quarter finals of this season's Division 3 Cup.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 2nd 2008.

There's been a change of name for both of these sides this season.  After two season's playing as the Windmill FC the team have re-branded under the banner of Progress Sports & Social FC.  Pre-season they were also moved into Division 3A where they are currently two points clear of favourites FC Eden who have two games in hand.  During their first season in the Alliance they finished in eighth and last season they dropped a place to 9th.  Manager David Meehan has got the team playing well this season and promotion to Division 2 still looks to be a distinct possibility.

In this season's Gledhill Cup they beat 3B side Stable Bar in the opening round and there was no shame in losing to semi-finalists Hydronics FC of the Premier Division in Round 2.  In order to reach this morning's Division 3 Cup quarter-final they've knocked out Ansdell FC in Round 1 and rivals Waterloo Sports & Social FC in Round 2.

Today's opponents were Frenchmans Cove FC of Division 3B.  Last season they played as McKenzies Estates FC and their first season in Sunday football saw them finish in tenth.  The current 3B table shows them in fifth place and recent form has been very good aside from last week's 8-1 mauling by Rossall Tavern FC.  Prior to that debacle they had taken nineteen out of twenty-four points so it would be interesting to see how manager Ian Squires' side would react this morning.

They too reached round 2 of the Gledhill.  A first round win over now defunct Bispham Hotel FC of Division 2A was followed by a round 2 defeat to South Beach FC.  They also entered the Lancashire Sunday Trophy but lost at home heavily to Eccleston and Heskin FC in round 2 after a 1st round bye.  They also received a first round bye in this competition and reached the last eight by beating Uncle Toms Cabin in round 2.

Last season the teams met three times.  In the two league games the points were shared with a win a-piece.  They also met in Round 2 of last season's Division 3 Cup when McKenzies won an entertaining game 4-3.  They went on to lose to eventual finalists Wrea Green FC in the last eight.

This morning's referee was Brian Ward and a quick glance at the fair play tables may have provoked some concern prior to the match as Progress were third bottom in 3A and Frenchman's were rock bottom of the Alliance.  The Moor Park weather was bright, cold and breezy.  Pitch 1 was the venue and there's few better sheltered pitches when the wind is blowing off the sea.  Unusually, we were underway at 10:55 with Progress in the 'Dennis the Menace' kit kicking towards the dressing rooms.

On six minutes Progress took the lead.  A break down the left by O'Loughlin won his side a corner.  He took it himself and poor marking in the Cove box allowed Danny Rodaway to pounce and covert.  0-1.

On 15 minutes the Cove were level.  Progress conceded about the 30th free-kick of the match.  The ball was swung high into the box.  In the above picture you can see Progress keeper Chris Teasdale's gloves coming together without the ball sandwiched between them.  The ball fell kindly for Cove's Danny Hartnet who made no mistake from short range.  1-1.  Keeper Teasdale then changed his gloves blaming his tools of the trade for the error.

On 19 minutes another defensive howler by Progress resulted in the Cove taking the lead.  Paul Mullin hesitated on the right flank and failed to put the ball in the stand.  Kev Gordon took it away from him and his excellent cross found Matthew 'Gorgeous George' Turner who placed it between Teasdale's legs.  2-1.

Despite seeing three goals the first half our of this match was one to forget.  Both teams seemed to be more interested in winding up the opposition and backchatting the referee who's whistle was rarely away from his mouth due to persistent niggling infringements.  Both teams can play football when they concentrate and eventually the game settled down and the result was a faster flowing and more interesting game.

As the interval approached Progress were having a decent spell.  Both Gillett and Meehan went close before they eventually equalised on 40 minutes.  An initial shout for offside wasn't given and the ball was cleared but an immediate crossfield pass sent O'Loughlin racing clear and he maintained his composure to place the ball past Cove keeper Fuller. 2-2.

On the stroke of half time Progress took the lead.  A free kick was conceded by Cove in a dangerous area wide of the area.  The initial kick was only half cleared but Dave Wadium's athletic ovehead kick looped over keeper Fuller and into the back of the net.  2-3.  The half time whistle was blown shortly afterwards.

At 4-2 down the Cove had their best spell of the match and played some great passing football.  However, they had to start pushing bodies forward and they paid the price as they were caught on the break.  Ricky Teasdale was sent clear and as he burst into the box he was scythed down by Danny Holland and referee Ward had little hesitation in pointing to the spot.

After a handling error by Teasdale the Cove claimed the ball had crossed the line but referee Ward waved 'play on'.

Sportspy Reports - Sunday March 2nd 2008.

The fifth goal knocked the stuffing out of the Cove and although they stayed together as a unit without recrimination a few heads dropped.  The pitch was enery sapping and the motivation to get back to defend was slipping.  Progress were hungry for more and following more good work from O'Loughlin he set up two of his players on the goal line to tap it in for a sixth but both somehow conspired to miss it.

Another disappointing defeat then for the Cove although something of an improvement on last week's result.  For an hour they were well in this game but they appeared to tire far quicker than their opponents this morning.  In the last half hour they were very heavy legged and cannot complain about the end result.

Like many Division 3 teams they were shaky from set pieces.  Three goals followed corners and free kicks and another three were on the break in the final half hour.  However, you don't become a bad team overnight and after recently picking up nineteen out of twenty-four points they still have a lot to play for in the league in only their second season.  On today's showing they do not deserve to be the league's 'bad boys'.  None of them played consistently well for 90 minutes.

A good win for Progress after a ropey opening half an hour in which they conceded two very bad goals.  In the end they ran out very comfortable winners and they can now look forward to a semi-final against FC Excelsior who beat Layton Institute Juniors this morning.  They're still in with a shout of a league and Cup double but FC Eden will now be hard to catch.  The remaining league fixture between the two will be crucial.

Performances of note today from Meehan, O'Loughlin and Roddaway although Mark Gillett was head and shoulders above the rest this morning.  He's exactly the sort of player required for this pitch today – a tenacious midfielder who simply wins the ball and gives it one of his own players.  He has a high level of fitness which saw him cover every blade of grass whilst cruising through every inch of mud.  Too good for 3A.  A top performance.
