Ex BFSFA referee dies suddenly

You may note that a little further down the homepage there is an article advertising free room hire for club presentation nights at the Co-op Club on Preston New Road.  It was sent in by ex BFSFA referee Martin Rogers (Pictured). Unfortunately, we've received the very sad news that Martin suddenly passed away over the weekend at the age of 43.  Read on for more details.

Sincere thanks to John McNicholas for sending in the following words;

Sad news reached those of us attending the Divisional Cup finals at Fleetwood Town yesterday that popular local Referee and Coach Martin Rogers had passed away suddenly at home on Friday. Regrettably, the news has since been confirmed.  Our sympathy goes out to his fiance and family who have lost him at only 43 years of age. Martin was a trusted and popular referee.  He was active in the local footballing community for many years, always sporting a fine sense of humour – a true football person.

Dennis Peters recalled fond memories of him suddenly appearing to ref in the old Combination as a youngster twenty odd years ago and after being so impressed he referred him on to Len Smith in the old Sunday Football arena.  Martin continued for many years and only ceased with officiating on a Sunday morning a couple of seasons ago to concentrate on his coaching role with Blackpool And Fylde College alongside Parkside FC player Jimmy Hone.  I refereed many times alongside Martin and along with Dave Connor and many others have also officiated both in the middle and on the line numerous times for Martin's College side. D.C. and I will miss his knowledge, wit and banter enormously. R.I.P.  Martin Rogers – A lovely Guy ! ! !
