![]() | SPS FC blow their chances of second spot after a narrow defeat to Golden Eagle, who extend their unbeaten run in the league this season to 20 games. |
It was down to Fleetwood Road this evening to see if SPS could get the points they required to clinch second spot. Even before the kick-off it had been a successful season for both clubs with the Golden Eagle sporting a nineteen game unbeaten run in the league before tonight's game. Additionally, SPS were trying to continue their very own unbeaten run of 12 wins on the trot.
SPS got the game underway with the wind against them, and both sides started cautiously with quite a bit at stake depending on the outcome of the game, and both sides wanting to keep their respective unbeaten records intact.
Both sides had early chances, but nothing that would really threaten either keeper until later in the half when a good strike from the Eagle was saved well low down by the SPS keeper.
In the second half things livened up with a superb volley by the Eagle from the edge of the area which the SPS keeper was equal to with a smart save. SPS then nearly took the lead from a long throw which was headed against the Eagle bar.

On 66 minutes Eagle took the lead. A strike from distance took a deflection wrong footing the SPS keeper and ended up in the back of the net.
With 10 minutes left Eagle were reduced to 10 men and this seemed to spur SPS on a bit as they pushed for an equaliser. Their best chance came when they were clean through on goal with only the keeper to beat, but the effort slid wide of the upright. In the dying moments SPS pressed again with Eagle clearing off their own line.
FInal score: Golden Eagle 1 – 0 SPS FC.
