Earlier this evening BFSFA side Quilligans FC were at the County Ground, Leyland attempting to win the most difficult Trophy in Sunday football as they took on top Preston Side AFC Lostock Hall. AFC Lostock Hall were last season's Preston Sunday league double winners. Here is a brief summary of what happened.
AFC Lostock Hall are crowned Lancashire Sunday Trophy winners
At the County Ground, Leyland tonight BFSFA side Quilligans FC were deservedly beaten 4-0 by an impressive AFC Lostock Hall FC who dominated the match from start to finish. The Preston side started much the brighter and went close on numerous occasions before finally taking the lead on 26 minutes through John Stead. Six minutes later and they were 2-0 up after John Sanderson was sent clear. He rounded Andy Speight before slotting it home.
Danny Rowe had the best opportunity for Quilligans when he broke clear but the keeper came out to save well. The half time break couldn't come soon enough for Quilligans who struggled to retain possession, created few decent spells of possession and who were often second to every ball.
In the second period manager Mark Spedding made a couple of changes at the break but after an enthusiastic five minutes normal service was resumed with AFC Lostock Hall dominating the play. Quilligans failed to create any chances of note and only threatened from the occasional corner. On 72 minutes AFC Lostock Hall wrapped things up after John Stead converted a low cross and as the final whistle approached Will Yates diverted another cross past Speight to round off a memorable evening for the Preston Champions.
A very disappointing performance from Quilligans FC who simply failed to turn up on the night. After getting so far in a tough competition that starts off with 150 teams that includes all of the best teams in the County they failed to do themselves justice. But take nothing away from Lostock who were up for this one from the start and retained momentum all of the way through the match.
The game was won in midfield where they allowed Quilligans' playmakers no time on the ball. After going six games without conceding a goal Quilligans looked vulnerable in defence. They hadn't conceded four in a game since 11/09/05 and on reflection, it could have been more. At the other end Lostock keeper Dovey didn't have a save to make in the second period until added time when Evans hit a low drive. Well refereed. Congratulations to AFC Lostock Hall who were well worthy of the win after a great performance in all areas of the pitch.
