Charity memorial match for Matthew Jones – Sunday May 17th 2009.

Skye FC are organising a charity football match in memory of a young player who tragically died after a motorbike accident.  The second annual Matthew Jones Memorial Trophy is on Sunday May 17th and will kick off at noon at the Co-op Sports and Social Club, Preston New Road, Blackpool, which has donated its facilities free of charge for the event.

Matthew died at the age of just 19 in March 2008 as a result of a motorbike accident five months earlier.The Mereside resident, who worked at Tesco, had appeared to be making a full recovery and amazed doctors by learning to walk again after smashing his pelvis and suffering serious head injuries.

And at Christmas 2007, he had even told his former football club, Skye FC, of the Blackpool and Fylde Sunday Football Alliance, he was determined he would return to playing one day.  But tragedy struck while Matthew recuperated with family in Ireland and he died in his sleep of a brain haemorrhage on March 7 last year.An estimated 250 people packed into St John Vianney Church in Marton for an emotional funeral service and later went to Lytham Cemetery for a burial.
