Charity match for fallen comrade.

A MEMORIAL match in tribute to the late Matthew 'Matty' Jones (pictured) has been organised for Saturday 19th April.  Promising young Clifton Skye FC footballer Matty died, tragically, at just 19 years of age last month. He had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Matty (17th November, 1988 – 7th March, 2008) joined Clifton Skye FC last year, straight from TSC FC, the team from Tesco, where he worked at the time.  He was 18 years of age.

He played a number of matches for us and was always a sought-after first team player. It was a shock to learn he had been involved in a serious motorbike accident last autumn.

Initially, we did not realise just how serious – until we were told it was likely to end his footballing career. It was believed he was unlikely to even walk again, because he had smashed his pelvis and suffered serious head injuries.

After spending weeks in hospital, he was finally discharged and went over to Ireland to recuperate with his dad.  However, Clifton Skye manager Ali Martin saw him at Christmas time and was heartened to learn Matty had been able to walk again – and was even talking about rejoining the team.

He told Ali he was working hard to get himself fit again and was aiming to defy the medical profession by returning to play football.  Ali told him, quite truthfully, there was always a place for him at Clifton Skye, because he had earned it.

However, less than three months later, we learned of Matty's untimely death. It was hard to believe that this lovely lad, only a teenager, had gone. An estimated 250 people packed into his funeral service.

And members of the team who were Matty's pals remain deeply upset at his untimely death.  Tributes poured in for Matty on Shoutbox and one very good suggestion came from our fellow Sunday league team, Visualize North, who suggested an annual memorial football match in his memory.

Ali thought this was a great idea and is pleased to announce this is now booked for the pitch at Stanley Park Oval arena on April 19, kick off noon.A team made up of Clifton Skye FC players and ex-players, who had played alongside Matty, will take on a team from Tesco in a fundraising match.

Each player will pay an entry fee and there will also be a collection among spectators during the match.

Afterwards, there will be hospitality at the Clifton Arms pub, Preston New Road, Blackpool – Clifton Skye's sponsor and Matty's local, where many of his friends are customers. There will be a raffle and other fundraising and all the proceeds from the day will be donated to Matty's family in memory of this great lad, who is sadly missed.

Many thanks to Russ, of Cash and Carry Kitchens FC, for his invaluable assistance in sorting out the pitch for us. We are indebted to you. Anyone requiring further information, or wishing to be involved in any way, in the event on April 19, please leave us a message with your contact details on our Guestbox on Clifton Skye's website; email Ali at or send us a message via Fyldesport to Skye_FC_Sec or Ali.

We are looking to get as many raffle prizes as possible, so any of you who own businesses out there who are able to contribute a prize of any kind should please get in touch.* Matty's childhood friend, Sarah, has set up a website in tribute to her lifelong pal. It is located here and messages of support can be left on the site.
