Sportspy Extra – Sunday November 11th 2007.

Calling in at the second half of the FA Cup match between Blackpool Wren Rovers Ladies FC and West Auckland Town Ladies FC at School Road.  Once again the weather conditions were playing havoc with the camera.

The Blackpool Ladies team rarely get any coverage in the local paper.  Under new management this season they're a lot more organised both on and off the pitch.  This afternoon they were involved in an important FA Cup tie against West Auckland Town FC.  After making their way through two qualifying rounds this was the big one.  Victory this afternoon would have put them in the hat with the 'Big Girls' like of Arsenal.  A regional tie against one of the major teams was a distinct possibility.

The half time score was 1-0 to the visitors.  The second half was a struggle for Blackpool (Red strip) as they found it hard work to mount any real pressure on the opponents goal.  A great save from Blackpool keeper 'Jazz' kept them in the game.  Deep into injury time Blackpool scrambled a dramatic equaliser.  A cross from the left was only half punched clear from the keeper and the loose ball was smashed home causing great scenes of jubilation.

However, it was all to end in tears as the game went to penalties and Blackpool missed a couple.  West Auckland were through.  A great disappointment for the girls – so near yet so far.  There's always next season.  Apologies for the poor quality photo's.  Be sure to check out the team's website here.

Jazz

Hard as nails and a great tackler.

Nailed.

Sam.

Young Caitlin out watching the match.  A ladies football star of the future.

Get the elbow in.

Eat my dust !

The Blackpool management team give instructions to the substitute.

Ouch !

Deep into injury time the keeper fails to punch clear and Number 12 (Red) is on hand to thump it home.  1-1.

Cramp sets in on tired legs as the girls go into extra time and penalties.
